Three Things: 1/28/14

Three random things that have been on my mind ....

1. My new shoes! I was in desperate need of new shoes. My old ones had at least 636.6 miles on them, plus whatever fitness classes I did in 2013! I stretched them out a little longer than I probably should've, but did so intentionally once I figured out how close I was to starting training. So far I have had 4 runs in them, and it is love-hate. They are Asics GT-1000. My biggest issues have been with my toes  - they feel pinched until a mile or so in and I have been getting blisters. I was getting blisters with my old shoes though, too. Will do a few more break-in runs before doing anything drastic.

2. I am getting so sick of winter, and it is only January. (thankfully we are nearing the end of this frigid month!) We have had three days of no school due to extreme temperatures and this morning is our third late start for the same reason. This Polar Vortex is really wrecking havoc; even on us Minnesotans!

I have always lost my consistency in winter, and while I was determined this year not to let that happen, I also was not prepared for winter running. That is something that will have to be worked on for next year. Items to address include clothing and routes (since my running paths are not plowed of snow). I have ran outside only twice since Thanksgiving, and the track at the Y has me feeling like a hamster!

3.  Speaking of winter - I have found I am more likely to get sucked into TV when it is too cold to do anything else. In the summer it is not unusual for my runs to go until 9:00 in the evening. But in the winter, I am just not that busy that late into the evening. I have never been one to watch series of shows, because I rarely would get to see every episode. Over the years, I have rid myself of evening work, and like I said sometimes have the time for it. I have been watching Sons of Anarchy, but with the season finale having been on before Christmas I have had to find other shows to occupy my time. These past few weeks it has been Chicago Fire on Tuesdays and Chicago PD on Wednesdays. Along with some Law and Order: SVU or Biggest Loser if I happen to be home to catch it. Speaking of BL - tonight is their triathlon. How motivating! But - I really should be at the Y at that time! Maybe I can catch the end after I get home ....

What has been your experience with breaking in new shoes? How do you stay motivated in the winter? And anything good on the tube in your world?

Stay warm on this Tuesday,  folks!
