Motivational Monday: 6/30/14

hahaha
this one always makes me laugh!

----

Plan for the week:

Monday: I've been enjoying the classes I've gone to at the Y, so I am really tempted to go to Cycle Box, which is followed by a 15 minute Core Conditioning class. I also need to run; I haven't ran since Grandma's, and I have the Hog Jog 5 mile race on Saturday!

Tuesday: Most likely, cycling in the afternoon and interval conditioning/kettle bells in the evening.

Wednesday: There is kickboxing mid-morning, and probably a shake out run in the evening.

Thursday: HIIT during Ava's gym & swim class, kettle bells in the evening.

Friday: Rest - 4th of July parade and fireworks!

Saturday: Hog Jog 5 mile run

Sunday: Rest (most likely)

----

Switching gears and trying to do some extra workouts/cross training. Now that I am not training for Grandma's, and I took over a week off from running, I am going to switch things up a little. I will continue to maintain 3 runs a week, but I want to do the other classes. I am hoping to jump start some weight loss and see if I can finally break out of the upper 160s, as well as stay motivated. At the end of July, I plan to start a 12 week training program for an October half-marathon.

What are you looking forward to for the new month?

Summer Reading

One thing I love to do, but don't set enough time aside for it, is reading. Through elementary school and middle school, I always had a book on me! In high school, it became less of an interest and I did it less. College was even worse. Aside from not wanting to read after reading for classes, I just filled my free time with other things. Over the last few years, I have gotten back into it some. I still don't do it enough though. Usually during the summer or school breaks (both working in a school and when I was finishing up classes), when I feel like I have more down time, I will get into reading. I will read three or four books consecutively, and then not read another one for many months!

So, one of the goals I set for myself this summer was to do some reading. I started my first book of the summer when I was at my parents two weeks ago, and finished it last week. The book was "When I Found You" by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

From Amazon's website:

"While duck hunting one morning, childless, middle-aged Nathan McCann finds a newborn abandoned in the woods. To his shock, the child—wrapped in a sweater and wearing a tiny knitted hat—is still alive. To his wife’s shock, Nathan wants to adopt the boy…but the child’s grandmother steps in. Nathan makes her promise, however, that one day she’ll bring the boy to meet him so he can reveal that he was the one who rescued him.  Fifteen years later, the widowered Nathan discovers the child abandoned once again—this time at his doorstep. Named Nat, the teenager has grown into a sullen delinquent whose grandmother can no longer tolerate him. Nathan agrees to care for Nat, and the two engage in a battle of wills that spans years. Still, the older man repeatedly assures the youngster that, unlike the rest of the world, he will never abandon him—not even when Nat suffers a trauma that changes both of their lives forever. From the bestselling author of Pay It Forward comes When I Found You, an exquisite, emotional tale of the unexpected bonds that nothing in life can break."

----

My opinion:

Somewhat of a slow start, and a bit of a predictable story line. Still - I found myself drawn in and wanting to know what would happen, reading too late into the night more than once last week! It was an easy read. Amazon reviews give it 4.4/5 starts; I would probably be between a 3.5 & 4 as well.

After taking a few days off - you know, to run a marathon and stuff - I am ready to start another book!

Race Recap: Grandma's Marathon

If you read my wrap-up that was posted on Sunday, you know that on Thursday I tweaked something in my back doing a kettle bell workout. I woke up Friday morning and my back was so stiff! I don't think I moved normally the whole time I was trying to finish packing. I was so, so nervous about what this meant for the remainder of the weekend.

We stopped twice on our way to Duluth for bathroom breaks. Getting out of the car was torture each time, but once I was up and moving, it would feel okay. When we got to Duluth, our first stop was the DECC (Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center), where the race expo was being held. This was right on the shore of Lake Superior, and boy was it cold! Even as Minnesotans (plus I grew up on the shore of Lake Michigan), we were still caught off guard by how chilly it was! The expo wasn't fantastic (in my opinion) for what I was expecting. Compared to other races and expos I've been to, I thought bigger race would equal bigger expo. Even if it was bigger, it wasn't necessarily better. Or maybe I don't know what to expect at an expo. That is a good possibility!

After the expo, we headed over and checked into our hotel - the Edgewater. We picked the Edgewater for a couple of reasons - 1) it's location right on the race course, so Chad wouldn't have to do a lot of running around with Ava and 2) the waterpark, and that we wouldn't have to fight the crowds to do a lot of other touristy stuff (not that we don't want another Duluth/North Shore vacation sometime). Everything worked out well, and they did a great job catering to racers and spectators for race weekend. Still, I had a hard time knowing how much the room prices were marked up just for race weekend - but that is the nature of the beast! I would consider staying there again, but also like the idea of trying to be right down in Canal Park. You do have to book rooms early though! We did some swimming, changed and went and ate dinner, and then swam some more before bed. I sat in the hot tub hoping it would loosen everything up (especially my back) but it almost had the reverse affect. My back felt loser in the pool than it did after the hot tub.

The good Lord heard my prayers over Thursday and Friday, and when I woke up (at 3:45 - a full hour before my alarm was set to go off), there was no pain in my back! I was so, so relieved. I laid in bed until about 5 minutes before my alarm was set to go off, and actually felt like I had willed away some of the butterflies. Surprisingly, I had no issues taking care of my business that morning (a usual problem on race day) and was uncharacteristically calm. I got ready by the light from the toilet area - and just had the door cracked to the mirror and sink area while I dressed, etc. I was trying really hard to make sure I didn't wake Ava up! I even took an in-the-dark selfie!

I grabbed a banana from the room that we had brought from home, and headed down to the lobby where they had a breakfast set up. I had planned to eat a bagel, but we forgot them at home! So, really - thankfully I knew they were going to have food for us or I would have had to find a grocery store. I ate a yogurt, an apple, a granola bar, and drank some water. I saved my banana for once we got to the start line. Busses ran from the hotel (and throughout Duluth) to the start line from 5:45 - 6:15. I was not going to wait for the 6:15 bus, although being on the first one meant I had over an hour to wait at the start line. That is when I used the restroom, took a phone call from Chad and Ava, walked around trying to stay dry and warm (it was upper 40s and drizzly), and ate my banana. They wanted runners in the starting chute at 7:15, so right around 7:00 I walked back to drop my bag. I waivered up until I was standing at the bag drop deciding if I was going to take my windbreaker off or wear it. I ended up taking it off, and had mixed feeling about it throughout the race. In the end, it was probably the right decision. There were, however, a few spot along the course where the wind came right off the lake and it was cold! At my second bathroom stop, I even noticed red splotches like I get when running and sweating in winter!

Once I dropped my bag, I headed to the starting chute. Of course there were many, many people that waited until after 7:15 (it was a 7:45 start), but I didn't want to feel rushed or crowded. I was still utterly shocked at how calm I was feeling and how hungry I was! Most race mornings, I am so nervous I choke down a few bites of something and call it good. What a difference. I hung out around the 5:30 pace sign. I was totally fine starting in back, knowing I was going to finish towards the back. The Clif Bar race team came out, and I decided to start with the 5:30 group even though I hoped to finish closer to a 5:15 or 5:20. The pacer was Sharon, and she was amazing (and for the record running her 111th marathon. Holy crap!). Her plan was to do a run/walk, in which she walked for one minute every half mile. To off-set the walks, they would run around an 11:40 when running. Sounded like a good plan. I got pretty cold waiting in the chute, but eventually .... we were off!

I tried to run with the pace group, but didn't like how they all bunched behind the pacer (I don't know if that is typical) and then had to stack the middle during the walk breaks to allow the runners to go around. I wish I would have taken pictures throughout the course! The line of people was obvious for the first few miles - not like smaller races where everyone is dispersed after the first one or two! Anyway. Since I didn't like the crowding and feeling like it affected my stride, I finally moved to the outside and slightly in front of the pace group. I stayed within ear shot, to maintain the pacing/walking/etc. I had sort of felt at the start like I needed to use the rest room, but thought it was just nerves. When I still had the urge around mile 3, I decided to stop. Once I caught back up to the pace group, I again moved slightly in front of them. Though the 10k, I was just slightly in front of them and could still hear Sharon. But after that point, I was feeling good and didn't want to keep stopping every half mile. I decided to just keep running.

For the next handful of miles, I was pleasantly surprised with my pace. I was just a minute of so off from a 12:00/mile average (so for example hit mile 7 in 1:25 vs 1:24). I was feeling really good. I tend to break these long runs into 5 mile increments because I know 5 miles is about an hour of running. 6-10 were my strong miles in training, so I wasn't surprised when they flew by during the race either. 11-15: I stopped once more for the bathroom, but continued to feel pretty darn good. I did start to notice the rubbing of a blister on my left pinkie toe, but tried to ignore it. I did take a Gu just past the 10k mark, and again past the half way mark. I took them slowly as to not cause any GI stress. My split time for the half marathon was about a 2:39, and I was okay with that. I was confident that a 5:20 was possible.

15-20 are when I start to struggle. I start to get bored. I have a harder time focusing. Generally speaking, they actually went really well - but I had to work to stay focused. When I looked at last year's timing, I thought there were going to be more splits, but then had read in packet material that it would be 10k, half, 20 miles, 25 miles, and end. Since I had told Chad that he would get a text at mile 16, I ended up calling him to tell him he wouldn't. I did this because I didn't want him to miss me when I ran by. I didn't know if they were hanging out outside, or if they were going to only come out when I ran by! This both helped and hurt .... I often have a hard time keeping my emotions in check during long races anyway, and calling him didn't help. Especially, when Ava got on the phone! So, I had to work extra hard to keep everything in check after that. But it kept my mind off any fatigue coming on! Considering I only had one 17 mile run that felt good, I was thrilled that I still felt okay at the end of this stretch! My Garmin read something around a 4:04 when I got to the 20 mile mark.

I purposely looked at my watch at Mile 21, knowing I had just over 5 miles left. My Garmin read 4:17, and I felt good about a 5:20ish finish. Just to back up for a second - one of the things I did when I broke away from the pace group was to walk the water stops - which were every two miles starting at mile 3. This was working for me. At mile 19, the stops started every mile - and I decided to keep walking every one. I think this almost hurt me more than helped, but I can't say for sure. You know how it is though - sometimes the more walk breaks you take, the harder it is to keep running or start running again. At mile 19, they also had bananas. This tasted really good, but also make me want extra water. So I felt a little sluggish for a bit!  Back to 21 .... I got to the mile 22 mile marker, and could see Lemon Drop Hill. I knew at the top of that hill was the Edgewater ... and Chad and Ava. I texted Chad as I walked through the water stop, "will me up this hill". I tried to run up it, but couldn't. I walked most of it, then started running again. And I almost missed Chad and Ava, who had walked a block or so up from the hotel! I stopped to hug Ava, let her run a few steps with me, and had a real hard time keep my emotions at bay!

Right around mile 23 is when I felt the blister on my left pinkie toe pop! Ugh. And this event is what made the last three miles really hard. Not that they wouldn't have been hard anyway ... I knew I was getting tired, but still felt okay ... and better than expected. :) The blister hurt when I ran, it hurt more when I walked, so I pushed when I could. These are the instances my head starts to win though - and I more or less did a walk/run to the finish. Trying to take pressure off the blister changed up my stride a little and I started noticing pains in my chins and my knees! So - the last three miles were not pretty ... but I finished! It was in these three miles the 5:30 pace group passed me - I tried to then stay with them, but their walk breaks weren't lining up with mine, so I just let them go! I knew Sharon's plan had them finishing around 5:28, but I also knew they were ahead of schedule for awhile. I have no idea what they crossed in .... but my final time was 5:29:54 - a 12:35 average. After the race, I made my way around the athlete area, waited for the shuttle back to the hotel, showered and changed. Took a quick swim with Chad and Ava. Then, since it was sunny for the first time that weekend, we went down to canal park to do some sight seeing. We ate supper at Grandma's restaurant - the original sponsor of the marathon. I waited until Ava went to bed, then took my sleepy butt down to the hot tub, and enjoyed it for the better part of a half hour!

When we got home on Sunday, we had to take one last picture ... me, Ava, and the sign her and Chad made for me. Notice she had to find her medal from her April 1k for the picture. Love it.

I am really glad that I was able to let go of the expectations I had put on myself. It made the race much more enjoyable, and somewhere around mile 18 I think I finally realized I was going to finish! It wasn't 100% easy, but I felt much better than I thought I would. It was quite an experience, but I think I am still on cloud 9. In some ways it feels like it was a bigger deal leading up to it.

I did go back over some of my data from long runs ... there were a few tough ones in the last couple of weeks. Then there was the 17 mile at the end of April that I ran with an 11:47 average ... and I already had the thought, "I bet I could do better." Might another 26.2 be in my (not so near) future?

Motivational Monday: 6/23/14

I don't know that the reality of it has sunk in yet! Feels like it was just another race, but it really is a pretty big deal! Promise, the recap is coming tomorrow.

----

I feel a little bit weird putting together a plan for what to do this week now that the marathon is over! I am not sure where to put my focus, although I do have a few shorter races coming up in the next few weeks. The focus this week will be rest and recovery, and workouts will depend on how my legs are feeling. I am already feeling a lot better than yesterday, but still sore through my quads.

Monday: keeping today easy. Might try some yoga just to stretch things out. There is a class at the Y in about an hour, but not sure I am going to rush to get there! I have one yoga DVD around here somewhere, and I know you can get them on On Demand now, too! Or maybe I will try a walk to shake things out. It just won't be very speedy! :)

Tuesday: I really enjoyed the change of pace with the cycling class I did last week, so I am hoping my legs feel up to it. I also wouldn't mind getting right back to the grind and going to Interval Conditioning/kettle bells!

Wednesday: I wouldn't mind going to kickboxing in the morning, but will play it by ear depending on how I feel after Tuesday. If I right away go back to feeling tired, I will take the day off.

Thursday: 30 minute HIIT classes while Ava is in gym & swim. She announced the plan for this week is tabatas. 30 minutes of tabatas should be interesting! We leave in the afternoon for a weekend in my husband's home town.

Friday: I am hoping I will be up for a little shake out run. There is a loop I can take from my in-laws; I just can't remember if it is 3 miles or 5 miles. :) I will map it out before we leave!

Saturday: I'd like to say I will get back in the groove and go for another easy run of 3-5 miles; but it will depend on how the morning goes. Since it is the town's festival days, there is a lot going on. My husband and I will each play in the bean bag tournament and hang out at the softball fields where the bags, softball, and volleyball are all going on. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. We have to be out there at 9, so we'll see.

Sunday: After the 4 hour drive back home, not sure what I can commit to for the afternoon/evening hours. I know yesterday afternoon when we got home, I didn't feel up to anything. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that I ran a marathon the day before ... next weekend all I will have to blame it on is late nights, dancing, and maybe a beer or two!

----

It won't be the most intense week, but the goal will be to make sure I am recovered from the weekend and slowly build back up to a good base.

Weekly Wrap-Up: 6/16/14 - 6/22/14

Monday 6/16: I planned to either do a slow 6 mile run with Ava or go to boot camp. It ended up being boot camp! We didn't move fast enough in the morning to get out, and the sky looked threatening all afternoon even though the storms didn't hit until around 6:30 in the evening. (For the record, we ended up with 6+ inches of rain between 6/16-6/19.) Anyway. The regular boot camp instructor was out, and the sub was Debra - who teaches the class I go to on Tuesdays/Thursdays. It ended up being a lot like our interval conditioning/kettle bell class, except with bouts of stair running. Oh my.

Tuesday 6/17: I intended to do a final dress rehearsal before Saturday, but we had enough rain Monday night that parts of the path I was to run were under water. If that was just the parts I could see, I didn't want to venture out into what I couldn't see. I ended up signing up for a 45 minute cycling class - despite warnings to not over do it or introduce a "new" activity into my routine before "The Big Day". Later that night, I still went to kettle bells, and was glad it seemed more upper body focused than many of her classes do.

Wednesday 6/18: I didn't know what I wanted to do this day. Cycling the day before went well, but I could feel it in my glutes. Since I knew Saturday was to be sort of a big deal, I took the day off! ;)

Thursday 6/19: During Ava's gym and swim in the morning I went to a 30 minute HIIT class; this week's focus was kettle bells. I felt pretty good going into the class. About 10 - maybe 15 minutes - in we were doing alternating single arm swings.  (so you'd swing with one arm, and switch to the other arm at the top of the swing). Doing this, I suddenly felt something in my lower back go really tight. I should of just left class, but I stayed and did what I could. But I didn't do everything. My back was seriously sore the rest of the day. I was so nervous not knowing what was going to happen and how it was going to feel the rest of the week. Needless to say, I new better than to try interval conditioning class that night!

Friday 6/20: Rest - drove to Duluth! Spent a good portion of our evening at the indoor waterpark!

Saturday 6/21: Grandma's Marathon! 26.2 miles! But this deserves a post of it's own .... I will work on it over the next day or so. I can't actually believe I am still up now!

Sunday 6/22: Rest .... a well deserved rest. As if I could do anything else. My quads are killing me!

Totals for the week (not including the marathon ....)

Wordless Wednesday: Hair Cut

before

during - she was so excited!

after

trying to show the difference in length

We all know I stink at being completely wordless ...

(not a drastic change, just enough to take some weight off and get the ends trimmed! Hopefully it will lay better now instead of always looking frizzy and unbrushed! This was her first cut at the salon!)

Three Things: Final Thoughts

My thoughts have started to race and go crazy as each day passes and we get another day closer to Grandma's Marathon! I thought maybe it would help slow my thoughts if I wrote out a few final thoughts I am having about my first 26.2!

1. Fueling. I don' feel like I have found a good fueling plan that works for me. I had started out using Gatorade chews or Clif Shot Blocks; depending on what I had on hand. I also had a Clif water mix and used Gatorade during the second half of a run. The problem with all of these is that about half way in - or between the 7-10 mile mark, they start to make me feel more thirsty. And they get harder and harder to chew. Not literally hard to chew, but more undesirable and extra gooey. And when I just couldn't take another one, I quit taking them. Do you think that has any impact on falling apart around 16 or 17 miles? I finally decided I am going to use Gu on race day. They don't give one away until mile 17, but I can't wait that long to work on refueling. My current plan is to take one around mile 6, one at 13, and one around 19. Along with alternating water and Gatorade at the water stops. My only other concern is that I am a very salty sweater. To the point of being able to see white marks and feel the gritty residue during and after my runs - when it is hot especially, not on every single run. I don't know if I should be using something more focused on electrolytes? A few week ago when I did the 18 mile run in which I feel asleep right after my run - I lost 5 pounds of water weight on that run! Not good, I know! For my next marathon - assuming there will be a next - this is an area I need to do more trial runs and research on for sure.

2. Pacing. I may have mentioned in one of my previous two posts that I am going into this race focused on slowing my pace down. Six weeks into my training, I had no doubt that I could finish in 5:00 or less - meaning an 11:27 pace or even slightly faster. The last six weeks of training have had me doubt on more than one occasion that I can even finish. So, I am hoping that slow and steady really does "win" the race, and am thinking anywhere between 12:00 and 12:30 pace - finishing between 5:15 and 5:30. I know I am going to hit miles in the beginning and middle that will be hard to keep myself going that slow. I am also worried even if I do, somewhere between mile 16 and 26, it is still going to get to be really hard! Still, hoping a slower beginning makes the hard more manageable. I have gone so far to look up times from last year (is that too stalker-like? It's not like I know them!) to see when they hit the various splits!

2a. Debating writing PMA in black, sharpie marker on my hand. Positive Mental Attitude. Because that it half my problem when the going gets tough.

3. Outfit. I know which capris I am going to wear. My black Energy Zone ones I shared about here. I am torn as to what shirt to wear. I have been comfortable wearing the tank I got from Women Rock last year, despite not always running in tanks. However, as of yesterday, the high in Duluth for Saturday is predicted to be 67*, with a slight chance of rain. Even without the rain, a high of 67* means it will be fairly cool in the morning. I don't have a favorite t-shirt as of late, but am thinking maybe my navy blue one from last year's Get Fit Be Fit challenge. Decisions, decisions.  Oh, and I did buy a new sports bra - an Energy Zone polyester/spandex that hopefully won't rub like my cotton ones! And I wore a different pair of underwear on the long run with my sister last week, and didn't have as bad of chaffing. So - I will go with those.

And a bonus number 4. Goals. Most importantly working really hard to just let go of goals I was hanging on to. Like the possibility of finishing in under 5:00 based on those first six weeks of training. And even finishing in 5:00. Enough people have told me over the last two weeks that I should just be proud of myself for attempting it, and to aim to finish. That is my number one goal. So - really want to stay out of my head, take it easy, have fun and finish. No pressure (but try telling that to my competitive, want to give it my all, racing thoughts).

What three things are on your mind today?

Motivational Monday: 6/16/14

It is race week. Just a handful of days until I toe the start line of my very first marathon.

Holy buckets. A mixture of emotions are starting to find their way in.  I am going to have to work to keep myself in check this week!

My wordiest plan of all time -

What do I want this week to look like? I don't know to be honest! I want to start my summer routine - trying to fit in some extra workouts and put forth some effort that has been missing while I have been working missing a few beats - without jeopardizing the feeling of fresh legs on Saturday.

Here are my initial thoughts:

Monday - I have a few thoughts on tomorrow .... if Ava and I wake up and can fit it in before her 11:05 doctor appointment, I will do a slow 6 miles with her in the stroller, and it may or may not include a few park stops. With the threat of rain and severe weather being predicted for the evening, this would free the evening up for a class. I think the only one that interests me on Monday's is boot camp - which could be a risk. They are serious classes! So, I am torn. If we don't "run" in the morning, we could go in the afternoon - weather permitting (taking rain, storms, and heat all into consideration).

Tuesday - Ava will be going to day care, so this is the day I plan to get one last dress rehearsal in.  I just don't know how many miles I want to do. 6? 10? 13? I won't go more than "half the distance" - and I do feel I could comfortably do it and not risk much for Saturday. I will follow my gut that day. Depending on the distance I go, I may or may not go to Interval Conditioning/kettle bells that night.

Wednesday - I will work out, but I really don't know what I will do? Maybe a brisk walk? Maybe a bike ride (if I can convince Ava to go in the bike trailer)? Class? Wednesdays are boot camp and cycle box days in the evening - I don't know what the day time schedule looks like! (I love that I can consider the day time schedule!) I doubt I will run this day.

Thursday - 30 minute HIIT class while Ava is at gym and swim. Interval Conditioning/kettle bells in the evening. If I run, it will be to the Y and back and that is it. Just to keep the legs loose.

Friday - Rest .... drive to Duluth! Oh my .... my pulse quickened writing that and thinking about what I will write next! Naturally, walk around the expo and do some touring of Duluth. Not a lot of walking if I can help it!

Saturday - Grandma's Marathon. All 26.2 miles. The quote that has stuck in my head the last two or three weeks is "You get what you work for, not what you wish for." You all know I haven't had the best month of training. I pray I have put in enough work to cross the finish line, even if it is not my best performance or time. I hope what I wish for pushes me through the road blocks I have seen in my training runs! I can't believe I am doing this!

Sunday - well deserved, rest! And driving the 4 hours back from Duluth!

Wrapup: 6/12/14-6/15/14

Not the best 4 days I could have had ...

Thursday 6/12: This is actually the only day of the four that I worked out. And I did it well. For the next 8 Thursdays (well, now 7) Ava has gym and swim at the Y. Since it is a combo gymnastics/swimming class, it goes longer than other classes would. While I could just sit and watch her - and I love doing that! - I can also use that time to get in a workout! So - I checked out the class schedule and noticed there is a 30 minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) class in the middle of Ava's class. Perfect. I headed up and didn't know if they had transitioned from the previous class or not; when I asked someone coming out she said it was kickboxing. This made me nervous since you typically have to sign up for kickboxing and that was not what was on the schedule! I figured it out soon enough - for the HIIT class, she does a different activity each week. This week did happen to be kickboxing, and no I did not need to be signed up. I loved it! Next week is kettle bells. I think it'll be a good fit! (especially since I hope to do some two-a-days throughout the summer, this will be a good way to get at least one in a week!)

Later, I ran - a little out of my way to get the distance - to the Y for my usual interval training/kettle bell class. It took me 24:25 to run 2.24 miles there (10:54 average), I completed the 40 minute class (which oddly enough she utilized the kickboxing bags!), and then ran/walked the 1.20 miles home in 15:36 (13:00 average).

It was a great day that included 3.44 miles of running in 40:01 and 70 minute of classes; for a total of 1:50:01.

----

The rest of the "weekend"  - let it be known that I was very confused Friday, Saturday, and Sunday about which day it was after a week away, trying to get used to summer schedule and not working, and having Chad home all three of those days while already confused! Chad never works Fridays, so that will be typical, it just didn't help me get organized!

Anyway.

The rest of the week, was spent doing laundry and cleaning I was behind on from being gone, running errands, getting ready to host a gathering with a group of ladies and friends I worked with over the last three years, and celebrating Father's Day. Whenever I thought I was going to get a run in, something else came up. For example, I though I would run Friday morning, but Chad insisted we get to a garage sale as soon as we could. (We got a small TV for our back living room until we can more easily afford a newer, slightly larger one). Then I was for sure going to get out Saturday morning, but didn't wake up feeling it. I knew it wasn't supposed to rain until later, but it was windy and cloudy from the get go. Plus, I just had the urge to clean! And it felt good to get that done! I wasn't going to run Sunday, because it was supposed to rain most of the day. When it didn't, I just couldn't wrap my head around getting a run in! So, I didn't. Do I feel guilty? Yes. Do I feel like I still got  a lot done and had a great weekend? Yes! Chad, Ava, myself, and even Max did go for a mile and a half bike ride/walk. Ava biked, the rest of us walked. I was so proud watching her bike that far. She did great.

It is what it is. However, after our gathering last night (which included too much food and a bottle of wine) and a Dairy Queen lunch in honor of Father's Day - I am motivated to find more days like Thursday in my near future!

Diploma Dash 5k - Race Recap

I found out a few weeks before I was set to go home that my hometown was holding the 3rd annual Diploma Dash on Saturday the 7th. I quickly decided, why not? My sister was also going to sign up, and depending on schedules we were going to sign the kids up for the 1 mile.

Going into the race, I had no idea what to expect. With all of the long runs, and trying to gauge marathon pacing, it had been quite awhile sine I ran fast. I decided on three goals:

Goal 1 - run it in around 33 minutes; about an 11 min pace.
Goal 2 - PR! For that to happen I needed to beat 30:34 according to my official time from Light the Night last October.
Goal 3: Run it in less than 30 minutes.

I went out fast, but it didn't start feeling fast or hard until about the one mile marker. When I saw my Garmin display under a 9:00 minute mile, I more or less knew I wouldn't be able to keep that up. At least I had given myself some cushion though.

The first water stop (I couldn't believe they had more than one for a 5k!) was a good excuse to grab a breather. I walked twice more after the turn around - once just to take a breather and once up the hill! Miles 2 & 3 were pretty consistent. I did some math in my head, and knew under 30 was a stretch but possible.

I turned the last corner, glanced at my watch, and sprinted in. (Well, it was a sprint for me anyway!)

The display on my watch read 3:09. Later, when I plugged my Garmin into my computer, this is what I saw for splits:

2   10:04.7 1.00 10:05
310:18.9 1.00 10:19
4:51.7 0.12 7:17

According to the race timing (it wasn't chipped time), I finished in 3:07! A pretty nice PR! According to official timing from October, I PR'd by 27 seconds. According to my Nike app timing from the same October race, I PR'd by 10 seconds. A little frustrated that I was just :07 away from under 30 - I mean that's the water stop, or the hill! Oh well!

A few pictures from the day:

my twin sister and me

with our Opa, her two oldest, and her husband

The one mile race happened at the same time as the 5k, just with a different turn around (obviously), so just my sister's oldest two ran. I think it is more geared towards the school-aged kids anyway. In the girl's 1st grade division, Krissah took 3/4. Jaycie won the 3rd grade division (even if it was 1/1)! They were so proud of their medals! (the awards ceremony was after this picture was taken)

My sister took 9/25 in our age group, and I took 11. (Official results can be found using the link at the beginning of this post)

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning!

Wrap-Up: 6/2/14 - 6/11/14

I missed posting a weekly update while I was out of town, so I thought I would post my workouts through yesterday. I will then share the remainder of this week as usual!

Monday 6/2: planned 6 miles; actual 6.10 miles in 1:08:20, for an average pace of 11:12. Since it had been a few weeks since I put together a good run where I felt like I had good pace and endurance, I decided to try something a little different with tonight's run. I did a 1:9 walk/run that I had read about a fellow blogger using. Since I typically start with a walk to warm up, I walked the first .1 of each mile and then ran the remaining .9. It worked well, and this was a great run to start off a week that I was really focused on building consistency and confidence.

**I can't figure out what I am doing wrong when I try to copy/paste my splits from Garmin Connect. I cannot get it to copy as a nice table like it shows, and when I try to fix it here it just messes with the formatting. Better than nothing, I guess. If you have helpful hints, I will take them!**

Tuesday 6/3: planned 3 miles, Interval Conditioning; actual Interval Conditioning (kettle bells). This class was different from others in that someone had a birthday; he turned 51 and to celebrate we had a variety of exercises that we did .... what else ... 51 reps. We did several sets of 51 jumping jacks, 51 crunches, 51 swings, 51 squats - and that is all I can remember. We did some additional exercises of course; she continued to have us work on racks and presses with our heaviest kettle bells. Super stoked that I can do them with my 20lb kettle bell! A month ago, I wouldn't have even tried a press with a 20lb anything!

Wednesday 6/4: planned 8 miles, but this was also a run that I doubted planning after I looked at what I wanted to do the rest of the week. I ended up taking it as a rest day to gear up for my long run the next morning.

Thursday 6/5: planned 20 miles that I needed to make up from the previous weekend. Ended with 18.01 miles in a time of 3:58:46 - or a 13:16 average. Needless to say, I was not thrilled with how this run ended, but let's start at the beginning. I decided I was going to try to follow the same 1/9 walk to run ratio that I had done on Monday. The first two miles went off exactly as planned - coming in at the exact splits I would like to - or had been hoping to be able to - come in at on race day. From miles 3-10, the paces got a little slower, but I still felt like the strategy was working. Everything was still fairly consistent and I was feeling strong. Even when mile 10 ended up being into the wind, I was feeling good about reaching my goal of putting together a respectable 20 mile run. 11 and 12 continued to be into the wind. I ran out of water and 12.25 miles. This made miles 13 -15 that much more interesting. Things were starting to feel hard, and I had a hard time staying positive. I tried different techniques to try to keep my mind off the frustration - I pushed through these miles with slow, but consistent paces - but ultimately fell apart anyway. I got to mile 15 about the same time I got to the next water fountain - and I made the mistake of over drinking. I also just sat at the water fountain for probably 10 minutes trying to regain energy and let the water settle. Clearly, this made it extremely difficult to start going again. I tried throughout miles 16 and 17, but the paces do the talking for themselves. I did a walk/run through these miles, and by mile 18 - it was all walk. I kept my Garmin going just because I wanted to know the final distance. I thought I ran exactly what I had drew up on mapmyrun.com, but thought that had come out to 20. So - I didn't even hit my mileage. I really don't know if it was just the distance, the mentality, if I wasn't fueled enough that morning, poor mid-run fueling, if it just got too hot (I started about an hour later than I had hoped to), or something else. When I got home, I sat down to take my shoes off and fell asleep sitting there (on a footstool right inside our door!) After 45 minutes, I woke up, showered - and then had a terrible headache for much of the evening. Dehydration and lack of refueling properly after the run? Those are my guesses. I might try to write a separate post on fueling during a run - because I feel like I have a lot to say .... and ask.

Sunday 6/8: thought about doing 10 miles - or some sort of long run; but ended up just taking it as a rest day. We had a birthday party with my family for Ava! All in all, it was a good day.

Monday 6/9: Part of Sunday's rest decision was that my sister and I decided when I got home on Friday that we would do a long run today. I knew it wasn't following the training plan, but I haven't really been on schedule anyway, and I did want to try another 20 mile run. The 1:9 ratio didn't exactly work the last time, so I decided instead to just try to maintain at a 12 min pace. After the first 6 weeks of training this cycle, I truly believed that 11:27 or faster was possible, but I am slowly allowing myself to let go of that. A 12 min average still has me finishing around 5:15, and I would be good with that. The first five miles of this run, came in right at the one hour mark - there was a little bit of variation, but it went well. The second five felt good. So good - that when I caught myself running between 11:20 and 11:30 - I didn't make myself slow down. Mile 8 was notably slower, but that is when I  (my sister was along for the run but just let me do my own pacing!) slowed down to take a couple of Gatorade chews. We hit up a Taco Bell to refill our water bottles and got back on the trail at 9.8 miles. I do a really good job of not drinking too much water the first half of these run - especially when I know where the water fountains are, but after mile 10, I get really thirsty! My Gatorade chews also make me more thirsty. Going back the way we came was tough. There wasn't a water fountain until after 17 or 18 miles! I felt really good through mile 15 - even through it got pretty hilly. I started walking up the hills - and knew that slowed me down some - but it also got harder and harder to keep moving back into a run! It was around 16 and 17, I wanted to be done with running. Finally we got to the water fountain - and like an idiot, I drank and entire water bottle. It was hard to get going and not feel like I was going to puke after that! You can see - we did a walk-run (more walking) back into the trail head. We didn't quite it 20 miles; and that was because we turned around at Taco Bell rather than turning around when we hit 10. Overall, it was better than my solo long run on Thursday. I still question how I am going to get through miles 20-26.2 when I seem to hit my wall around mile 16. With that, my long runs are officially done for this training cycle. Whatever I change up between now and race day, will be untested in a run!

Wednesday 6/11: Although I hoped to get home and be able to do a short run, it was 6:00 before Ava and I pulled back into town. So a traveling day and rest day it was.

Over the week and a half, my total training times were:

4 runs for 46.58 miles in 9:41:25 (obviously padded by two long runs!)
1 Interval Conditioning class for 40 minutes

Total Training Time: 10:21:25

Off to finish the week with a few more workouts!
