Motivational Monday: 8.31.15
We've all done it - let our excuses catch up with us. We are human. It happens.
This week, I am celebrating that getting over that hump, overcoming the excuses (legit or not, because there are some legit excuses), and staging your comeback can be so rewarding!
I am also preparing for a week of making sure I don't let my excuses catch up. This teacher is back to work this week. A week of prepping my classroom, sitting in meetings, holding parent teacher conferences, lesson planning, and more. I have to stay on track though. These cannot be excuses.
What does your week look like? What will you need to be on the lookout for so it doesn't become an excuse? What are you celebrating this week?

City Views and Race ReCap!
What a fun weekend; what a great race!
We started the weekend by stopping in Lakeville to eat lunch at Cracker Barrel - it is the only one in the state of MN, I believe! I didn't take any super fun pictures, but I always love the table games!
We were able to check into our hotel as soon as we got there; Ava and I then headed to the race expo - or "Expotique" as they call it for this women-only race. She was a little upset that there was no play area, but liked that I allowed her to buy some charms for her shoes at one of the booths.
When we got back to the hotel, she got about an hour of swimming in before it was time to get ready for the 2.5k race - or her race as we dubbed it.
A couple of St. Paul views on our way ...
I was so impressed with her! I warned her not to go out too fast, but she did anyway! Seriously though - according to my Garmin her split for the first mile was 12:43! She was just going, and was enjoying herself! Right around the .75 mark was the second hill of the course. It was a decent size hill, though not very long. This is where she got tired. When she reached the top of the hill, there was a bit of a charge to her step. It didn't last long though, especially when we had to go past the finish line before we could loop back to it. She was just ready for her medal! Seeing dad along the side of the road helped to keep her going. So did a little friendly competition when she saw other little girls stop and go. (maybe I shouldn't have told her at the beginning one way to try not to go out too fast was to tell yourself you'd pass them later!) We did the touch and go method until the end - I was hoping she'd get a surge of energy to run across the finish and give us one of her photo finishes, but she didn't have it in her. That's okay! I am super proud of her. This was her first "adult" race, and longest run yet, I'm pretty sure. She finished in 19:11. Officially:
Because we had a late lunch, we didn't eat supper before the 7:30 run. It was between 8:30 and 9:00 when we got back to the hotel (and dark, so we didn't want to walk around town too much). We ended up ordering from a place that delivered. Then we pretty much ate and went to bed!
I got up around 6:30 on Saturday morning. I got ready at some what of a leisurely pace - I didn't feel like I had to be down to the athlete village area early, since there was a 45 minute gap between the start of the half marathon and 10k. I got there about 7:30 (it was a quick walk from the hotel), used the porta-potty right away, and met up with my marathon buddy! Alena and I met at Grandma's Marathon last June, and have met up at a couple of races since then. We also keep up with each other on Facebook. I ate two Honey Stinger waffles while waiting around for the start. I had never had them before, but I also knew we hadn't packed anything for in the hotel room, so I picked them up at the expo. They did the trick, and tasted pretty good, too. With just about 10 minutes to go until the start, we made our way over to the start line. Good thing too, because according to our watches, they started the race about five minutes early. That might be why I felt like a ton of people were coming up from behind me during the first mile or two.
I eluded a little bit when I shared my goals for the race that if things went seemingly perfect, I could end up with a 1:12, or at least a 12min/mile pace. After years of practice, I finally seem to be able to control not going out too fast. I didn't know what I wanted to do as far as my run/walk intervals. Over the last week or two, I've been able to go to 5-6 minute run intervals - if I felt good, I wanted to keep going, but I was also nervous about leaving myself depleted for the second half of the race. My first interval, I walked at 7 minutes mainly for that reason. The next interval, I ended up going 10 minutes, though not entirely on purpose. I also told myself that if I felt that good, to let it happen! Most of the rest of my intervals were 10-11 minutes, and I only ended up with 5 or 6 walk breaks on the course!
While 10 minutes off my 10k PR, this race did exactly what I needed it to do! I ran my best run of the summer, by far! Still, I felt like I could have given more. I didn't end feeling exhausted, but in this case I would say better safe than sorry was okay. I felt like I made the comeback I was looking for and gave me the confidence to go out and push a little bit harder in the rest of my training for this fall!
I actually ended up beating my "A Goal", finishing in 1:11:43 officially! According to my Garmin, I ran negative splits expect for the mile with the biggest of the hills in it!
All in all; I'd call this race a success! After heading back to the hotel and showering, we spent the rest of the day at Como Zoo and Como Town. I'll save those pictures for another post!
So proud of her growing medal collection!

Did you race this weekend? Did you get the results you were expecting?
On a side note, this post took FOREVER to write this morning. Mainly because blogger was being super slow, and I was having difficulty adding pictures. If not blogger, my computer. Ugh. Now to move on to the rest of my to-do list for the day.

Race Goals!
This weekend brings upon me my "comeback" race, as I am dubbing it. My first race since last October, and my first race since my hiatus this spring.
Women Rock - there are a number of race distances - 5k, 10k, half. In addition, this year they added a 2.5k on Friday night, and challenges if you run the 2.5k, the 5k, and one of the longer two races.
I opted to stick to the 10k, although the challenges were intriguing! I am also doing the 2.5k on Friday night, with Ava!
Women Rock is pretty special to me, since it was where I ran my first two half-marathons!
My 10k PR from last year is 1:01; while I don't expect to beat that, I do have some goals for myself.
A Goal: Finish in 1:12 (or slightly over; 12 min/mile pace). I've had two runs at the beginning of this week that were my fastest of the summer, and weren't too far off from this. If everything goes perfect, and I can push .... maybe.
B Goal: Finish between 1:12 - 1:18. When I first started running again at the start of this summer, I was closer to 13 min/mile. If I can finish anywhere in this range, I will feel good about being consistent this summer.
C Goal: Finish feeling strong. Even if I can't maintain those paces, I want to at least finish knowing I left everything out on the course. I don't want to feel like I could've given more.
I am anticipating a hill, that the years I ran the half was right around mile 10. I know they have since changed the half course, but something tells me that hill is still going to part of it.
So, here goes nothing! Hoping for a good, fun, and rewarding weekend!

Are you racing this weekend? What are your goals?
Have you ever had to comeback and run a race knowing a PR was not a possibility? This is one of the first times I've run a race knowing a PR wasn't likely. It is not the greatest feeling in the world, but life happens. Setbacks occur. We just need to pick up where we are, and not focus on where we were. I am finally coming to terms with that!

Whitewater State Park 2015
Beware: this should probably have been broken into more than one post! It is picture heavy though, so not too much reading! :)
This is fast becoming one of my favorite state parks. There are few mosquitos. We don't have raccoons rampage in the site at night. It is close to home; seriously, probably the closest weekend getaways we've had each of the last two summers. It has a decent size beach to take Ava to for swimming and playing in the sand. Lastly, the hiking trails. I love the hiking trails at this park. It is some rougher terrain, and in the flatland of southern Minnesota, it has some great views since it is tucked down in the bluffs.
****
Picturesque limestone bluffs and deep ravines make Whitewater a very popular southeastern state park. The 2,700 acre park is an angler's paradise with brown, brook, and rainbow trout swimming in the spring-fed Whitewater River and Trout Run Creek. Visitors enjoy a sandy swimming beach, a year-round visitor center, easy-to-challenging hiking trails, camping, a group camp, and a modern group center. Come in the winter to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and stay at the group center in rustic, winterized cabins. All through the year, discover the natural and human history of the area at one of the many interpretive programs, visitor center exhibits or self-guided trails.

We got there around 12:00 or 12:30 on Friday, but had to go hang out at the beach since our site wasn't open yet. When we finally got set up, we just laid back and relaxed. We also made a late lunch. Around 5:00, I headed out for my run and climb to the base of the Elba Fire Tower, and Chad took Ava swimming. We made a later supper of chicken and salad, took showers, started the campfire, ate Smores, and went to bed!
I did not sleep good Friday night, so stayed in bed Saturday morning as long as possible! For breakfast, Chad made bacon, eggs, and the potatoes we never made Friday night for supper. Shortly after eating, Ava was ready to get on the move. I promised her beach time after she hiked Chimney Rock trail with me. She agreed. For being marked as a medium trail, it had some pretty rugged terrain - but it was only a mile from our campsite to the beach.
Beach time:
We went back to the campsite for lunch, and I gave Chad some time to relax. While I love the hiking and beach and busyness of the day while camping, he likes to get up early for a walk or hike (mainly to look for deer) and then take a nap and relax during the day. It didn't help he had a migraine brewing most of the day.
Finally, I headed out for my own hike (though Ava could have done this trail if she wanted to). It is one of the two marked difficult, but the rocky terrain we did earlier was just as hard, if not harder, than anything I encountered on this trail. Here's some views and stupid selfies I took!
To end the day, we went to a spot you can wade in the river, let Max get a bit muddy, and had a campfire. We got some color packs at the Nature Store that you throw in the fire, that was kind of fun! It rained a lot overnight Saturday night, and Sunday morning was quite cool. We took our time packing up, I took some pictures of our campsite, and we headed home! Another successful camping trip!
