Weekly Wrap-Up: 8.17.15 - 8.23.15

This week my focus was to get back to working out after being sidelined the prior week due to an angry foot. I cut out the double workouts I had maintained the previous two weeks, and just focused on easing back into it. I didn't do as well as I probably could have; but I wouldn't call it a bad week either.

Monday, 8/17: I was both nervous and excited to be heading out for my first run in over a week (8 days to be exact). I kept it on the shorter side, not knowing if my foot would get aggravated or not. Overall, I was happy with how the run went! My pace was about where it had been 8 days prior. My foot felt good. There were a few twinges here and there, but I don't know if I would have thought twice about them if I hadn't been limping and using crutches 7 days before. I slowed when I needed to, took an extra minute to walk a time or two, but overall kept going, and had a solid workout.

Tuesday, 8/18: kettle bell interval conditioning class. I wish I would make notes of what we did each night in class, because every time I finally get around to putting this post together all my workouts blend together. If I remember right, we did 4 rounds of the same grouping of exercises, which included core work, lunges, squats, and swings.

Wednesday, 8/19: With the unseasonably cool weather, I was looking forward to a run. In the middle of the day. Following 4 staff development hours. Instead, while sitting in staff development, I was aware of my foot yelling at me a little bit. And then I stayed at school for an additional three hours planning and organizing my room. Better to play it safe in this instance.

Thursday, 8/20: I intended to run - and most likely do a long run. The weather wasn't quite as cool as I'd hoped for, and Ava and I didn't move very fast in the morning. So, taking her to the day care at the Y became a no-go. When Chad got home, we started getting ready for camping. Instead of running, I ended up doing kettle bells instead. The theme of the night was pyramids. She gave us three pyramids to complete, and we ended with 35 swings and 35 push-ups. Pyramid 1 was squats and push-ups, pyramid 2 pilate squats with an high row and reverse crunches, and pyramid 3 was squats with an overhead press and Russian twists. Each time we started with 10 reps and worked our way down to 1.

Friday, 8/21: after setting up our campsite and eating a late lunch, I headed out for my run. I ran from the campground to the Elba Fire Tower, just like I hinted at last week. I climbed the steps to the base of the tower, then went down and ran back! It totaled 6.01 miles. I literally hit 3 miles as I started down the steps. The run there felt great! I had good paces (why can I still not say that without comparing to where I was a year ago- I always thing good for this summer) and the running was feeling pretty effortless. I got to the steps in the middle of a run interval, and made myself just start climbing. My intent wasn't to run the steps, but to keep moving. I did end up needing some breathers, but I made it up all 600+ steps in about 11 minutes. I paused a bit at the top, took some pictures, caught my breath, and kept going. I made it down in 7 minutes - but did talk with a gentleman who was also going down, so that slowed me up a little. My miles back were slower even though I felt like I was giving the same effort. I guess that was to be expected.

bet you cant guess where the steps are by looking at this elevation map of my run?!? :)

Saturday, 8/22: I really could have used a long run, but I knew months ago today would be about hiking around Whitewater State Park. Ava did the first mile with me, with the promise of beach time when we were done. Afterwards, we went back to the campground, ate lunch, and I left for another hike which ended up being just over two miles. My paces are not fast. The first mile, I had a five year old with me! Throughout the hike I did on my own, I often stopped to take pictures without stopping my watch. I am okay with that! Hikes like these aren't about just the stats and numbers. On the day, it was 3.39 miles of hiking in 1:56:10.
