1. If you were to pick one of the following three options for toning up/slimming down; which would you choose and why? P90x, Insanity, or Jillian Michael's Body Revolution? Or maybe you would recommend something else entirely?
2. Rain, rain, RAIN. Ugh. Every day this week has rain - and even a slight chance of snow - in the forecast. I can handle some rain; but the all day drenching like we dealt with today? No, thank you. Reminding myself it is better than 18 inches of snow and a snow day on May 2 like we experienced last year.
3. Packing is no fun. Trying to discern what can be packed now, what needs to wait, where to put the boxes so you can still live a somewhat normal life - the many thoughts going on in my head right now! Not wanting to wish time away, but I never have been one for transitions.

Motivational Monday: 4.28.14
I am more apt to say first you feel reborn and then you feel like dying. At least that has been the patterns of my long runs. Either way, this journey is tough but it is going to have substantial rewards! Just need to fully believe that each and every day! Here's to your hopes, goals, and dreams, too!
-----
A new week, a new plan. Sort of; not much is changing from week to week at this point. This week does have a slight jump in mileage; I will do what I can given the pattern of recent weeks.
Monday: 5 miles
Tuesday: Interval Conditioning/kettle bells
Wednesday: 8 miles
Thursday: 5 miles, Interval Conditioning/kettle bells
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 18 miles
Sunday: Rest

Weekly Wrap-Up: 4/21/14 - 4/27/14
Time for another week in review. Not quite the week I set out for, as you will see.
----
Monday: planned 4 miles; actual nothing. BLAH. Not at all how I was hoping to start the week. It started when Chad texted me and asked if I could pick up Ava because he was meeting with our lender. They were getting a bunch of paperwork ready to go, and it was taking much longer than expected. Okay - fine. Even though we all know how easily I can get thrown off my routine. It is one of my flaws by far. Well, with having been out of town all weekend, our evening was already thrown off. We didn't do our grocery shopping over the weekend like we normally do, so that needed to get done. One thing led to the next, then the another, and I knew I wasn't getting out. We did take maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile walk with Ava and Max - but that was it. The evening ended with us packing a half a dozen boxes. So a frustrating start to the week, but at least we used some of it to our advantage.
Tuesday: planned and actual: interval conditioning w/ kettle bells. What can I say? At least I can consistently make it to this class! Highlight of class tonight was doing squats with racking the bell and going into an overhead press with the 12lb kettle bell! It has only been in the last couple of weeks that I will attempt doing anything using the shoulders especially with the 12lb-er. I have been taking the 20lb as my heavy, 12lb as my moderate, and 10lb as my light. I might bump up to a 14lb moderate, and 12lb light! Yeah for some progress amongst the frustration.
Wednesday: planned 8 miles; actual 1500 rep workout. I ended up skipping my run for a couple of reasons - 1) it was cold and windy and 2) Chad asked my to skip it so he could get to bed early. At 6:30, I was dressed and ready to go when he mentioned he'd really like it if I stayed home, help with Ava's bath and getting her ready for bed, and let him go to bed early. I regret not going; this was supposed to be the week I got back to increasing my overall mileage (not just my long run), and get back to some consistency. I have felt so out of rhythm for way too long now. I hate it - and when this happens I start comparing myself to others and feel even worse. So as I write the first part of this update on Wednesday night, I feel pretty crappy! Still, the night wasn't a total waste. I dug out my resistance bands (the ones we got with Xbox Active) and completed the 1500 rep workout I posted a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, although by the end I could feel my form slipping on a few of the exercises. I did split the 6 rounds into two sets ... mainly because the first three rounds I was working around Ava, so I stopped, got my lunch ready, etc. and then finished the last three rounds after she went to bed! The first three rounds took 39 minutes, the second three 30 minutes, for a total of 69 minutes on an otherwise cruddy feeling evening.
Thursday: planned 4 miles and IC class; actual 3.30 miles and IC/kettle bells. The three miles was more a result of not getting going fast enough. There is just such little time in the evenings! I was actually feeling pretty good about the paces I was running - just wasn't able to maintain. Ended in 35:49 - 10:50 average. Nothing surprising at class - I did make the change in the weights, but never used the moderate (14lb). Just used the 20lb for swings and the 12lb for everything else we did with kettle bells. We did one minute intervals of cardio, ab work, and the kettle bells. It wasn't the hardest class she put us through, but as always a good workout.
Friday: Rest day. Although we did take the bikes out for a quick 15 minute ride. Chad pumped up all the tires that went flat over the winter, and it was a perfect weather day. Couldn't resist!
Saturday: planned 17 miles; actual 16.96 mile long run. Generally speaking, I was happy with how this run went. For most of the run, anytime I started to feel tired or hurt (sore not injured), I was able to push through it. My paces stayed fairly consistent, but it is fairly clear where I stopped for some water or to take some shot blocks. I took my first three shot blocks at just past mile 7, and the remaining three just past mile 12. That is also where I finished my water, and called my husband - who graciously drove out to give me some Gatorade. Once I got through mile 15 without the tightness through my hamstrings that I experienced two weeks ago, that felt like a huge accomplishment. Even through mile 16, I felt pretty good. I was starting to get pretty fatigued, and could feel my whole body sort of leaning to the left. I tried to keep pushing, but it was clear my body was done. That last mile was pretty miserable. I'd slow to a walk and my legs would tighten up. I'd try to pick up back to a run, and the spot in my lower left back would get really sore and tight. So, I went between the two. I was at 16.96 when I got home and just said enough. Normally, I would have gone to the end of the block to hit my goal distance - but I'll admit, I just gave up on the run. I am trying not to let one bad mile have me feeling so down; I just keep asking myself if I feel like this at 15, or at 17, or next week at 18 - will I have it in me to push all the way to 26.2? I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think I could, but the unknown it haunting me at this point. Just keep running, right? Final stats were 16.96 miles in 3:19:50 - 11:47 average. Looking at the mile 16 split, it's clear how slow that last mile was. Yuck!
Sunday: I didn't know when the week started if I wanted to do cross training or rest today. One of the things I talked about earlier in the week was not feeling like I had to do cross training on Sundays since I've kept up with my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Given the week I had, I wanted to do something - be it biking, swimming, or running. My excuses for resting include: waking up still pretty tight in my lower left back, the dreary, raining weather, laundry and packing, and Ava's dance show.
----
So totals for the week are:
2 runs for 20.26 miles in 3:55:38
2 Interval Conditioning classes for 80 minutes
1 Strength Workout for 69 minutes
Total time spent training: 6:24:38
On paper, not a bad week. Just feeling frustrated that I am not building my base or increasing my overall mileage like I would like to. Also frustrated that I can workout 6 hours in a week and not being losing any weight ... but that is it's own frustration.

Finisher Shirt Friday
What a great day to be a runner in Minnesota! Fridays we are allowed to wear college sweatshirts or our district sweatshirts with jeans. I am going to stretch it a little bit and wear my most recent finisher shirt. Why not? It probably looks better than my hooded sweatshirt!
If you want to get really technical, I can wear the one from 2011 underneath it that shows the SCSU bridge to relate it to my alma mater ... (SCSU = St Cloud State University)

Answering my own questions
Last Friday, I answered 10 questions given to me as part of a Liebster Award. I then nominated some fellow bloggers to answer questions I asked of them. (I hope you will check out their blogs and see their answers ... or just read their blogs regardless of if they answered because there is good information there!). At any rate, I thought it would only be fair to answer my own questions that I asked of others:
1. Who was your biggest role model as you first started running?
At the time, she was just a co-worker. She was training for the Twin Cities Marathon - I don't know if it was her first, second, or what. But - I was envious of her lifestyle! To this day, she is someone I turn to for running advice and motivation. We both ran the Earth Day half-marathon last Saturday, and there were several messages back and forth over the last few weeks encouraging each other to get 'er done. Today, though we live 2+ hours apart, I consider her a friend! Thanks, Nicole!
2. What is your best running memory?
I thought long and hard about this one, and wondered what I thought my answer would be when I asked the question. I honestly don't know- and there are many good memories. I guess the best one would be finishing my very first race. I ran the Earth Day 5k for the first time in April 2009. My goal was under 40 minutes, and I finished in 34:27! Talk about feeling accomplished. A pregnancy and many a weigh-in yo-yos later, I finally beat that time in April 2013, and again in October 2013. So, it as a cherished time for a long time!
3. The time you now spend running; what was it filled with before you started running?
I am not really sure! A few things that come to mind are my scrapbooks are years behind, I finished school in 2009, and I used to work evening shifts and sleep in!
4. What is your favorite TV show?
Right now, I would have to say my favorite TV show is Chicago Fire, with Chicago PD a close second. It has only been in the last two years or so that I have gotten into a habit of watching series. Before that I would never get to see a show on a weekly basis, so I didn't bother. Now, the 9:00 time slot is too addicting, and the culprit of my late nights!
5. What is one habit you won't give up, even though you know it is not the healthiest?
Sugar! In any form, really. Mainly in Pepsi. I have waivered on the amount I drink since 2008 from none - minus the occasional dinner out - to one a day, with a few extras snuck in. Lately, it has been one a day, plus about 3 extras during the week. Trying to cut the daily ones out and stick to the here and there ones.
6. If you could have lunch with someone famous, who would you pick?
Maybe someone like Mother Teresa, so I could ask how they constantly maintain such compassion for others. I love being around other people, helping others, and making a difference; but I don't go out of my way to do it. I am more judgmental at times that I like to admit, and can become easily flustered with people. So, it would be interesting to hear how someone who always finds good, puts others before themselves, and can truly say they made a difference in the life of another can just keep going and give so much of themselves. It wouldn't have to be Mother Teresa, but someone that description fits - even if they aren't famous!
7. What is your favorite season for running?
Oddly enough, I don't hate running in summer, even though it is hot and humid. Still, my favorite running season has to be fall. I love the scenery. I love the crisp air. It is not too hot. Not too cold. Not too rainy. There is something extra serene about a fall run in Minnesota.
8. Describe the one route you would be okay running over and over for the rest of your life.
There are actually two routes that come to mind - and they both involve running along water. That would have to be a priority because I think that is the most relaxing place to run. The first is in my hometown, and probably the one I would chose for that reason alone. My hometown is in eastern WI, along Lake Michigan. Running the lake front is a favorite each time I go home. I marvel at it now - even if it's not that spectacular, and wonder how I took having the lake right there for granted. The second is a route around a lake in the middle of a town. But there is part of the route that is a gravel road, so you get the feeling that you are out in the middle of nowhere without having to leave your backyard. That route was one of the hardest things to leave when we moved to our current town!
9. If time and money were no object, where would you choose to go on vacation?
I thought this one would be easier to answer! I don't think I would go to just one place. I would either take the time and money and travel the world - seeing all the sights I want to see; or I would do something like drive Route 66 and see a variety of things.
10. What is your favorite past time other than lacing up the running shoes?
I would have to say if I could spend the time I spend running with anything else, it would have to be photography. I have done Ava's pictures since she was a baby, photographed just two other families, and even used my tripod to take my own family pictures. I would love to learn more tricks to the trade instead of just getting few lucky shots! I would love to expand who I take pictures of. And just in general have more time to play with my cameral. I don't always have the time, but it is a top-rated hobby in my book.
----
Thanks again to those who I nominated that played along! If you'd like to answer the questions, do so in the comments or leave a link to your blog!

Three Things: 4.22.14
Three Things Thoughts:
As I have mentioned, I just finished Week 9 of an 18 week training program. That puts me at the half way point of one of the most momentous things I have ever embarked on.
It is almost like Week 20 of a pregnancy - you're half way there, you sort of have this thing down, and yet you have no clue about what's ahead.
For more of a sports-themed analogy, it is like half time. We need to talk about what's going well and what game plans need to be changed.
So, since the half way point of anything is something to be taken note of, I wanted to jot down three thoughts I am having at this point in the game.
----
1. What's going well: In general, I've been satisfied with how my long runs are going. I started with a stretch of strong, faster than expected long runs that really motivated me to keep going. Then I had one the week before I was sick that kicked my butt, the 15 miler that was disappointing but really nothing to bask at, and a PR half-marathon. I can only hope that the second half long runs leave me feeling as strong and confident as the first half.
2. What needs to change to win the game: I am less than thrilled with my inconsistency of getting my week-day runs in. I am not sure I have gotten all three week-day runs in the entire training cycle. If I have, it has been just a few. (It is supposed to be a four runs per week training plan - three during the week plus the long run.) I fully understand the long run is the most important, but I also know I need to do better at the shorter runs. Which isn't going to be easy given all we have going on in the next 4+ weeks. In all honesty, I will be content if I can get three runs in during the week and forego the fourth. If I look at the fourth as a bonus, and take some of the pressure off that I put on myself, I may be more successful going forward.
3. What we'll take note of and play by ear: One of the things I set out to do is follow Hal's plan (of three week day runs, a long run on the weekend, and one hour of cross training on Sundays) AND maintain my twice a week interval conditioning class. In an ideal world, that is manageable; however, as a full-time working mom - it is difficult! And I know many can attest to that, and still fit it in - and I am envious of you. It is a lot for me to balance. I have decided to let the cross training go on Sunday - realistically, I am getting in over an hour (80 minutes) of cross training in each week through my classes. Who says it has to be on Sunday anyway? Again, it will take off some of the pressure off of achieving the ideal schedule, allow me to focus on the 4th run if that is how I want to spend that extra day, or just take care of some of the things that get in the way during the week.
----
In a nutshell; I want to be a 4 runs per week -6 workouts a week total - super dedicated athlete. But, especially now, that just isn't doable. So - I am choosing to face the second half of my current training plan focusing on what is important and most vital. I will aim for three runs per week and my two Interval Conditioning classes. I will push to make progress, and come out strong when it matters most - June 21!
When the school year is done, I can reevaluate and try to up the ante when I have a little more time on my hands!
----
What three things are you thinking about right now?
Weekly Wrap-Up: 4/14/14 - 4/20/14 (EDR '14 Recap Included)
Yikes. From a sick week to a lazy week! I am sure it had a lot to do with being out of routine last week; it just led to having a difficult time getting back into a good routine. So, the stats are not padded this week. The workouts not great. But, it is real and not all was lost.
----
Monday planned 4 miles; actual just my arm challenge. It was day 11 (not counting rest days) and I did 29 push-ups, 55 chair dips, 80 bicep curls, and 65 punches. I skipped my run because I got home later than I had other days recently, totally lost track of time while getting supper ready, and before I knew it, it was after 6. I was starting to feel tired and just decided to skip it and make it up later in the week. Huge mistake. By 7:30 or 8, I remembered Chad had a work meeting Wednesday night and wasn't going to be home, so I knew by Monday night it was going to be two missed runs this week. Blah.
Tuesday: planned Interval Conditioning; actual Interval Conditioning (kettle bells). The class had a different instructor this week, but she did well filling in for a very good one. The workout used many of the same types of moves, just a different intensity level. She did intervals of jumping rope or running in place, with some swings, targeted moved (mainly squats or lunges, arm work, etc.), and some yoga moves. I am not a huge yoga fan - mainly because I've probably never given it a fair chance, but all in all, it was a good class. I totally forgot about my arm workout. Oops.
Wednesday: planned 7 miles; actual "rest". I don't mean that in the sense of rest was earned or needed. Chad had a work meeting, Ava and I had a bunch of errands to run when I got off work, and it was raining. And the first two not been going on, I could have worked with the third one. Regretted forgetting how busy this night was going to be, but working really hard to not let the bad/off nights get to me.
Thursday: planned 4 miles and Interval Conditioning; actual Interval Conditioning (kettle bells). Aside from packing and getting ready for the weekend, there is no great reason why I didn't get my run in. I did make it to class - we did some ab work, some swings, cardio intervals of course, squats, etc. Typical class, really. I love this class though and couldn't imagine not keeping it in my routine!
Friday: planned rest; actual rest. Unless you count running with Ava while she finished her first-ever 1k. What a fabulous experience! She was adorable. We were about a third of the way through when she says, "Momma, I don't know if I can run this far." So, I encouraged her by saying we should take a walk break. Five steps later, she was back at it! As we were nearing the end, she says, "I'm getting so tired!" But she kept going! And at the end, you could tell she absolutely loved the excitement of the crowd and knew she was nearing the end. She finished so strong. Chad wasn't in a great position for this picture, but we were so, so lucky that this picture ended up in the gallery by the St. Cloud Times. I am so excited to have this picture to help this memory last forever!
Saturday: planned Earth Day Half-Marathon; actual - obviously, the half!
Overall, this race couldn't have gone much better than it did. I had a couple of goals for this race: yes, I wanted to PR with a 2:30 or faster -- I really, really wanted between a 2:20 or 2:25 -- but knew that would be tough and not necessary! However, more importantly, I wanted to finish without feeling like I hit a wall. My first two half marathons ended rough, and I didn't want that experience. I am so proud to say they both were accomplished. I started at the end of the pack near the 2:30 pacer. I think this was one of the best decisions I made. Starting near the back, I believe, totally helped me avoid going out too fast. From the beginning, it was a comfortable pace. There were actually times I felt like I could have pushed it, but I kept holding back. I was not going to hit the wall! I really didn't know where to pick it up if I had anything left in the tank without risking "the wall" before the end. That is something I would like to try and figure out; but in reality, by the end there wasn't much left anyway. A few details:
Even before the end of Mile 1, I did find myself slightly in front of the pacer. I stayed slightly ahead of her until, I think, the 4 mile water stop. From there, I was slightly behind her until right around mile 11. This was frustrating for me, because according to my Nike app, I was around a 10:55 average the majority of the race. (more on that in a little bit, too). I had to keep reminding myself I was feeling good, go with what I had and what I was being told by Nike, and not let it get in my head. I did see her in the refreshments line and she told me she was slightly ahead of the pace, and she does that to have a cushion at the end. Makes sense.
Another piece that I had to work to not let get into my head was the mileage markers. The first one was almost right on. From 2 forward, Nike was telling me I was hitting the mile markers before I hit them; and each one was more off than the previous. By mile 7, I started checking when I was hitting the mile markers. 7.14, 9.22, 10.24, etc. My battery on my phone ended up dying at 12.97 miles so I didn't have final stats for myself, but my friend that was also running ended up texting me and telling me Run Keeper told her 13.46 miles. That is a little frustrating in and of itself. If it was truly 13.46 miles, my time was even better ;) - and my battery died, so I have no idea! Oh well. It really is minor.
Really, I have no big stories from the race. I felt like I did a really good job of staying constant. That was huge. I never used my Shot Blocks, but did take half of the Gu they handed out. I need to start working with fueling. I didn't feel the strongest at the end, and am going to have to feel stronger at 13 to make it to 26! I did take an orange slice at the 12 mile water stop; while it tasted good, I think it was the culprit for the sick feeling in my stomach the rest of the race. Too acidic maybe?
Anyway. Here are my stats from Nike:
So, this doesn't quite make sense. I edited the distance to what my friend told me it was. My app quit at the 2:22 - the splits up to that should be accurate.
Here are the official results; that I will go with even if I don't know if the distance was accurate!

Sunday: planned rest; actual rest.
----
Totals:
1 run for (approximately) 13.1 miles - 2:27:51
2 Interval Conditioning classes - 80 minutes
Total Training: 3:47:51 + 1 arm challenge routine. (With being gone and the screwy routine, I sort of forgot about the arm challenge. On to a new week!)
----
I am so ready to have a week where I have some consistency back, reach some goals, and feel strong. Not that all has been bad or difficult, but it has come and gone in phases. I am about to embark on the second half of marathon training -- and want to go into it -- and end it -- at the top of my game.

Liebster Award: 10 Questions
Sara, at Run Sara Run, nominated me for a Liebster award! Thanks Sara. In the spirit of playing along, here are the rules, the questions she gave me, and my answers! Enjoy!

1. Why did you start blogging?
I initially got introduced to the blogging world when I had some time to work on my scrapbooks and other creative projects. I followed some craft blogs, scrap challenges, etc. It was also a fun way to keep a journal of sorts and let people keep up with what was going on in our world. My first blog was www.mrandmrssmith06.blogspot.com. Then I started this one. Now, I have everything here, and while it is mostly about running, it's also about life.

The Rules:
1. You must link back to the person who nominated you
2. You must answer the questions given to you
3. You must pick ten bloggers to be nominated for the award
4. You must create ten questions for your nominees
5. You must notifiy the nominees

2. What is your favorite snack?
Well, what snacks don't I like? Ha. Daily, I usually pack some cheez-its and a Special K bar for an afternoon snack. As once in awhile indulgences, I would say my favorite is chips and dip. As summer nears (no matter how far away still), I am starting to crave a DQ Blizzard!

3. What is your favorite workout lately?
I would say I feel like a beast in my interval conditioning class when I am using the 20lb kettle bell to do swings.

4. How many hours per week do you spend training?
On average I would say it is about 4. I have had some higher weeks, and some not so good lower week. I would like to be right around 6 every week, but we all know sometimes life gets in the way.

6. What is the best advice you have received?
My mom will always tell me, "Follow your heart."

7. What is one thing you are proud of?
There is a lot I know I can be proud of; but I would say the number one thing I am proud of is being a mother. Ava is my world, even on the days I know I don't give her the patience or attention she deserves. I went to career day in 2nd grade dressed in my mom's clothes and carrying my baby doll. I wanted to be a mom! Through trial and heartache, that dream finally came true in May 2010. I am proud of that, and I am proud of her.

8. Are you a morning runner or night runner?
I am a night runner, but mainly because that is what works with our schedules. When Chad worked second shift and I had to go in the morning, I got it done then. I am not a morning person, but I do think I would prefer to run in the morning. It's just not an option for us, and sometimes things only seem greener on the other side so who knows if I would actually like it better!!

9. What is your favorite running distance?
I have only done 2, but I think half-marathons. I am enjoying training for a marathon, but it is a long distance and takes a lot of time. My first 20 mile run is going to fall the weekend of Ava's birthday. That is going to be so hard to get in! But I will earn my pizza at Chuck E. Cheese! I like the half because it is challenging without being overwhelming. Still, ask me again after June 21!

10. What do you love most about the blogging community?
The real life accounts of what works and what doesn't. It is easy to make things look how we want them to look on the internet, but I know I try to keep it real. And by wanting to keep it real, it holds me accountable and makes me feel bad when it doesn't work out that way. Still, I don't fib about it, and I appreciate other bloggers who truly share their experiences with the rest of us. It gives me the opportunity to learn from others about what works, what doesn't, and get new workout ideas.
So now to award my own Liebster awards! I nominate: Christy at Christy Runs, Katie at Runs for Cookies, The Hungry Runner Girl, Shut Up and Run, Neon is My Color. I know it is not 10 nominations; but it is 5 bloggers I enjoy keeping up with! I hope you each will take the time to answer the questions! :)
And my questions for you are:
1. Who was your biggest role model as you first started running?
2. What is your best running memory?
3. The time you now spend running; what was it filled with before you started running?
4. What is your favorite TV show?
5. What is one habit you won't give up, even though you know it is not the healthiest?
6. If you could have lunch with someone famous, who would you pick?
7. What is your favorite season for running?
8. Describe the one route you would be okay running over and over for the rest of your life.
9. If time and money were not object, where would you choose to go on vacation?
10. What is your favorite past time other than lacing up the running shoes?

anxiously awaiting all the financing on our new house to go through; even though we are pre-qualified, it is just nerve-wrecking.
decorating the whole house in my head!
dreading the packing process.
feeling bittersweet about upgrading Ava from a toddler bed to a twin size.
going for a 2:30 or faster on Saturday.
wishing the three day weekend wasn't going to be so busy!
counting down the remaining school days (34).
craving a Chipotle burrito!
wondering why I keep staying up so late; what a bad habit!
loving the spring walks and watching Ava ride her bike around. She so loves being outside!
thinking. doing a lot of thinking. Mainly about this; I haven't updated since and I am at a cross roads of what to do next.
wondering what is current with you? :)
