Weekly Wrap-Up: 4/7-4/13

Ugh. Not a great week at all. You may remember me mentioning in last week's update that Saturday I woke up feeling the start of  a cold, and that on Sunday I was coughing but not feeling terrible. Well, it did turn into quite the chest cold; and sidelined me for a few days this week.

----

Monday: planned 4 miles; actual rest. I woke up with a fever of 100.4! I still went to work and everything, but knew better than to try and push it that night. I've always read, above the neck you're fine to keep working out, below the neck to rest. So rest, I did. Which sucked, because it was a beautiful 50-some degrees outside. I did do Day 6 of my 30 day Arm Challenge (18 push-ups, 25 chair dips, 50 bicep curls, and 35 weighted punches).

Tuesday: planned Interval Conditioning/kettle bells; actual rest. I was going to try class with the intent of backing off on the cardio if needed. But by the time I was on my way home from Ava's dance class, I was feeling so exhausted, I knew taking the night off and getting another good night's rest was probably the better choice. It was a rest day on the arm challenge.

Wednesday: planned 7 miles; actual rest. Tonight's rest was a combination of "this cough is still pretty forceful and I don't quite feel 100%" and "on my god, I've been ignoring my dishes and unfolded laundry since Sunday and it is stressing me the heck out." Don't get me wrong, I was feeling lazy and frustrated by this point in the week. I ended the night with Day 7 of my arm challenge (20 push-ups, 30 chair dips, 55 bicep curls, 40 punches).

Thursday: planned 4 miles and Interval Conditioning; finally, a workout! Actual 2.09 miles and Interval Conditioning. The start of the run was downright uncomfortable. My chest was so tight, it felt like I hadn't run in years. I am fairly certain it was the lingering sinus/cold symptoms, and not a true decrease in fitness! By the end of the two miles, I was feeling like I was in a pretty good rhythm. Final time was 23:36 - an 11:16 average. Then I did IC class. It was a 15ish minute warm-up, followed by 1 minute intervals of various excersices - we used the bosu and ran up and down, used them for core moves, did variations of kettle bell swings, did some leg and core work using gliders, etc. It was a good class. I like the variation, and what can't you do for one minute? I felt winded at times still, but overall a good workout. Still managed to fit in Day 8 of my 30 day arms (22 push-ups, 35 chair dips, 60 bicep curls, 45 punches).

Friday: planned rest; actual rest, despite my intentions to try and make up some time from earlier in the week. I did take Ava for a walk on her bike (that's sort of an oxy moron, huh? I walked, she rode) and then the three of us went out to the Nature Center for another walk. It wasn't a complete waste of an evening, but no true workout. Plus, I'm pretty sure I was sleeping between 8 and 9! I even forgot it was an arm day. Oops.

Saturday: planned 15 miles, actual 15.01 miles. Let's start with the good: I ran 15 fricken miles. My longest run ever; oh, the milestones we hit when training for our first marathon! Now it wasn't pretty or fast, which is sort of a bummer. I kept mile 1 comfortable. Mile 2 I kept fairly slow - especially since it was into the wind the whole time. I am not surprised that mile 4 was my fastest, since my legs were still fresh and it was the first mile I had the wind at my back! Through mile 9 or 10, actually felt okay, and I was surprised to see my splits were as slow as they were. I knew my average pace was slow, and that was in part due to stopping (walking) every two miles to take a Gatorade chew and some water. I still thought my individual mile paces were going to be quicker - they felt better that the data shows. At 10.27, I stopped at the Y to fill my water bottle. I don't know if it was the pause to fill the bottle or that I drank too much water at the water fountain, but this is when it got hard. My legs slowly deteriorated from this point on. Between mile 12 and 13, I was hurting. My hamstrings and behind my knees especially. I took frequent walk breaks those last few miles. Still, I went on to finish! It felt good to go the distance, despite the disappointments. I am especially frustrated that 3 weeks ago, I ran 12 miles in 2:15; the week before that 11 in 2:03. Those were great times for me! Two weeks ago, I had a phenomenal 9 mile run. I was so excited about my training and my upcoming half. Then last week and this week, were mediocre. Last week, I couldn't even finish 14; today, a 12:00 average, which is one of my slowest runs in a while. Yes, I know I had the cold this week. Yes, I know I still ran my longest run ever. I was just such on a training high, and it sucks to get pushed down. At one point my legs got so tight in those last few miles, I questioned how I would ever go 11 more on them!??! Anyway. Time to kick the negative thoughts to the curb, and focus on the positive. Ended with 15.01 miles in 3:01:53 - a 12:07 average.

Sunday: planned cross training; actual rest. No good reason why. In no particular order, I did the laundry, dyed Easter eggs with Ava, had a meeting with our realtor (!!) prepped lunches, browsed the furniture store, gave Ava a bath, and relaxed. However, I squeezed in Day 10 (after missing day 9) of my 30 day arms at the 11th hour - (28 push-ups, 50 chair dips, 75 bicep curls, 60 punches). It is burning by the end!

----

Far from a fabulous week, but reality it is.

Totals:
2 runs for 17.10 miles in 3:25:29
1 Interval Conditioning class for 40 minutes
4 sessions from my 30 Day Arm challenge (88 push-ups, 140 chair dips, 240 bicep curls, 180 punches) - 20 minutes total (the first one this week was still done in just under five minutes, but they are taking longer! This is just an estimate!

Total time training: 4:25:29

Here's to brighter weeks ahead!
