Weekly Wrap-Up: 4/21/14 - 4/27/14

Time for another week in review. Not quite the week I set out for, as you will see.

----

Monday: planned 4 miles; actual nothing. BLAH. Not at all how I was hoping to start the week. It started when Chad texted me and asked if I could pick up Ava because he was meeting with our lender. They were getting a bunch of paperwork ready to go, and it was taking much longer than expected. Okay - fine. Even though we all know how easily I can get thrown off my routine. It is one of my flaws by far. Well, with having been out of town all weekend, our evening was already thrown off. We didn't do our grocery shopping over the weekend like we normally do, so that needed to get done. One thing led to the next, then the another, and I knew I wasn't getting out. We did take maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile walk with Ava and Max - but that was it. The evening ended with us packing a half a dozen boxes. So a frustrating start to the week, but at least we used some of it to our advantage.

Tuesday: planned and actual: interval conditioning w/ kettle bells. What can I say? At least I can consistently make it to this class! Highlight of class tonight was doing squats with racking the bell and going into an overhead press with the 12lb kettle bell! It has only been in the last couple of weeks that I will attempt doing anything using the shoulders especially with the 12lb-er. I have been taking the 20lb as my heavy, 12lb as my moderate, and 10lb as my light. I might bump up to a 14lb moderate, and 12lb light! Yeah for some progress amongst the frustration.

Wednesday: planned 8 miles; actual 1500 rep workout. I ended up skipping my run for a couple of reasons - 1) it was cold and windy and 2) Chad asked my to skip it so he could get to bed early. At 6:30, I was dressed and ready to go when he mentioned he'd really like it if I stayed home, help with Ava's bath and getting her ready for bed, and let him go to bed early. I regret not going; this was supposed to be the week I got back to increasing my overall mileage (not just my long run), and get back to some consistency. I have felt so out of rhythm for way too long now. I hate it - and when this happens I start comparing myself to others and feel even worse. So as I write the first part of this update on Wednesday night, I feel pretty crappy! Still, the night wasn't a total waste. I dug out my resistance bands (the ones we got with Xbox Active) and completed the 1500 rep workout I posted a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, although by the end I could feel my form slipping on a few of the exercises. I did split the 6 rounds into two sets ... mainly because the first three rounds I was working around Ava, so I stopped, got my lunch ready, etc. and then finished the last three rounds after she went to bed! The first three rounds took 39 minutes, the second three 30 minutes, for a total of 69 minutes on an otherwise cruddy feeling evening.

Thursday: planned 4 miles and IC class; actual 3.30 miles and IC/kettle bells. The three miles was more a result of not getting going fast enough. There is just such little time in the evenings! I was actually feeling pretty good about the paces I was running - just wasn't able to maintain. Ended in 35:49 - 10:50 average. Nothing surprising at class - I did make the change in the weights, but never used the moderate (14lb). Just used the 20lb for swings and the 12lb for everything else we did with kettle bells. We did one minute intervals of cardio, ab work, and the kettle bells. It wasn't the hardest class she put us through, but as always a good workout.

Friday: Rest day. Although we did take the bikes out for a quick 15 minute ride. Chad pumped up all the tires that went flat over the winter, and it was a perfect weather day. Couldn't resist!

Saturday: planned 17 miles; actual 16.96 mile long run. Generally speaking, I was happy with how this run went. For most of the run, anytime I started to feel tired or hurt (sore not injured), I was able to push through it. My paces stayed fairly consistent, but it is fairly clear where I stopped for some water or to take some shot blocks. I took my first three shot blocks at just past mile 7, and the remaining three just past mile 12. That is also where I finished my water, and called my husband - who graciously drove out to give me some Gatorade. Once I got through mile 15 without the tightness through my hamstrings that I experienced two weeks ago, that felt like a huge accomplishment. Even through mile 16, I felt pretty good. I was starting to get pretty fatigued, and could feel my whole body sort of leaning to the left. I tried to keep pushing, but it was clear my body was done. That last mile was pretty miserable. I'd slow to a walk and my legs would tighten up. I'd try to pick up back to a run, and the spot in my lower left back would get really sore and tight. So, I went between the two. I was at 16.96 when I got home and just said enough. Normally, I would have gone to the end of the block to hit my goal distance - but I'll admit, I just gave up on the run. I am trying not to let one bad mile have me feeling so down; I just keep asking myself if I feel like this at 15, or at 17, or next week at 18 - will I have it in me to push all the way to 26.2? I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think I could, but the unknown it haunting me at this point. Just keep running, right? Final stats were 16.96 miles in 3:19:50 - 11:47 average. Looking at the mile 16 split, it's clear how slow that last mile was. Yuck!

Sunday: I didn't know when the week started if I wanted to do cross training or rest today. One of the things I talked about earlier in the week was not feeling like I had to do cross training on Sundays since I've kept up with my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Given the week I had, I wanted to do something - be it biking, swimming, or running. My excuses for resting include: waking up still pretty tight in my lower left back, the dreary, raining weather, laundry and packing, and Ava's dance show.

----

So totals for the week are:

2 runs for 20.26 miles in 3:55:38
2 Interval Conditioning classes for 80 minutes
1 Strength Workout for 69 minutes

Total time spent training: 6:24:38

On paper, not a bad week. Just feeling frustrated that I am not building my base or increasing my overall mileage like I would like to. Also frustrated that I can workout 6 hours in a week and not being losing any weight ... but that is it's own frustration.
