My three things for this week are three races I am thinking about adding to my list of races for this year:
1. The 14th Annual Y 5k is adding a 10k option this year; which is a race distance I have not done before. This is on May 3rd; the only concern I have is that my long run that weekend is 18 miles. I don't know if should do a 10k and the 18 miles that weekend or run the 10k as part of my 18 miles. Of course I could skip it all together.
2. The Darren Dash is another local run, currently getting ready to run it's third year. This year's run is on May 31; the same day I am slotted to run 22 miles. There is a 5k option as well as a half marathon. Positives of this one are I will already be out running around town anyway and proceeds go towards good causes. Negatives are I am not sure about running the half as part of the longer run (which order do you run in? does it affect the training for the bigger race? etc.) and it is small. I sort of appreciate blending into the crowd! Last years race looks like it had about 50 people. My time would be at the back of the pack -- which is more of a self-esteem issue than anything.
3. Women Rock is a Team Ortho event up in the Cities. I have run the half each of the last two years - since the Women Rock race came to be. It is the only Team Ortho race I have done. Currently, they have a half-marathon, 10k, and 5k option. I am not sure which distance I would choose. Initially, I was thinking the 10k - to cover that distance. However, see #1! I am already planning on a half in the fall, and wasn't looking for other big races given that I am running the marathon in June. Still - it is tempting. I was thinking we would go to my parents Labor Day weekend this year, but I am not sure that is going to happen. So then, why not run?!!? I am not sure what I am going to do yet! The option is there, though!

What is your experience with doing other runs or races as part of a longer training run? Would you recommend it or not?
Do you run new races each year or do you have a loyalty to ones you've done before? How do you choose what to run and how many races to do each year?
Do you prefer big races or small?
