Motivational Monday: 10.20.14

Seemed fitting after yesterday's race! Here is my race report!

----

New week. No specific training plan in place. Aside from any impromptu 5k or 10k races, my racing for 2014 is over. I don't plan on any double-digit races until spring! Crazy, but refreshing. My plan for the next couple of months will be to maintain a solid base, but to have fun and run when I want to while maintaining cross training. I have felt pretty burnt out on running and following a training plan lately, so I think this comes at a good time. And after yesterday's race, I feel better about taking time away from running knowing that the right cross training really will make you stronger and help your running. Mid-January, I will start a marathon training plan .... say, what!??!? Yeah, more on that later! :)
Here's the plan for this week:

Monday: Rest! I think I am going to feel Sunday's run, and rest sounds like the best plan!
Tuesday: Kickboxing and Interval Conditioning/kettle bells
Wednesday: I wanted to do TRX, but it is full. Maybe a shake-out run, maybe boot camp.
Thursday: Rest (conferences 4-8)
Friday: Cycle Box and some core work
Saturday: 6-8 miles (my goal during maintenance will be to do a 6-10 mile long run each weekend)
Sunday: Cycling/kettle bells/yoga (20/20/20 class)

Do you race year round or take some time off?

Mankato Marathon (Half) - Recap

I cannot start my own race re-cap until I share a few pictures of Ava's KidsK. This girl made me proud again!

Tired, but pushing to the finish! We really need to work on pacing ;)

Chad took this one of her running in. I told her Daddy was there, so she was looking and waving at everyone! I guess I wasn't specific enough regarding how far up he was!

----

Now on to my own race report! I have to say, the day went much better than I was expecting given the state of my training cycle. We all know good runs and bad runs can happen at any time for reasons beyond anything we do. Today was an on day for me! While it was a cold wait for the start (feel-like temps in the upper 30s), it really was perfect running weather once we got going.

I've learned and worked really hard on all my races this summer not to go out too fast. It worked for me again. The first two miles were consistent, and faster than I was expecting, honestly - around 10:45 each. Around mile 2.5 was the first water stop - this slowed me down that mile a little along with some gently rolling hills. Just before mile 3, the marathoners went one way and the half-runners went the other. For just a moment, I wished I was turning left with the full-runners! Here is where I came up to the split - I just loved the view of all the specks of runners who had already made the turn. The pictures isn't zoomed in nicely, but it's a fun picture.

I had a sharp pain in my right glute/hip area for around 1 mile. It started around mile 2 and ended somewhere after the mile 3 marker. The next two miles weren't as fast as I ran the first two, but when I hit mile 5 in well less than 55 minutes and passed an energetic cheer zone I was set! From that point on, I just kept going. And I felt amazing. I walked briefly at the water stops, but otherwise was running strong. I have no good words to describe it! I just ran!

Here's a picture of the trail we got to run on for much of the race. My kind of route for sure.

Around mile 8, I could feel the fatigue start to set in, but it was mind over matter because I was still maintaining great paces. It wasn't until after mile marker 10 that I started walking up a few of the hills. Mile 12 was really tough and I had to dig deep. But - I'm not going to lie - I knew the PR was in the bag by this point. It was just a matter of by how much. My Garmin read 2:23:33 and 13.25 miles. It gave me an average of 10:50/mile. My official final time was 2:23:30, and with a 13.1 mile distance gave me an average of 10:58/mile. Official results can be found here.

greeted by my biggest fan.

Chad and Ava were at the finish but we didn't see each other until later! Hmmm. oh well.

Here are my splits from my Garmin. I really can't put into words how excited and proud of myself I am for running faster than 10 min/miles in recent shorter races, and to pull off a faster than 11 min/miles in a half-marathon. Feeling like I owe a lot to the instructors of my classes at the Y! The cross training I am doing is making me stronger for sure!

Race Weekend

As we leave for Mankato this morning, I am not sure what my goals are for tomorrow's half-marathon. With my less than stellar training cycle, with minimal miles logged, I am relying on my cross-training and overall fitness level.

I ran several races this summer that I was beyond pleased with. Such as: Diploma Dash, Hog Jog, Brat Trot, and Graniteman 10k.  I am hoping I can take the feeling of that success, even though they were at shorter distances, and push myself through this race. (not taking anything away from Grandma's, just going for more speed this time around!) I really did run a handful of races this summer!

When I first posted my training plan for this race, I admitted that it was quite ambitious. I was really motivated to train for a PR. Maybe it was my known love-hate relationship with races or the timing of training while transitioning back to work, but things just did not go according to plan. Either way, at that time, my goals for this race were:

A goal - 2:20
B goal - between 2:20 - 2:25
C goal - PR with anything faster than 2:27:51
D goal - finish! :)

I don't know if a 2:20 is doable at this point. Rather than set myself up for huge disappointment, I am going to shoot for an 11:00 min/mile average - which I think will be a pretty tough effort. With that said, here's my adjusted goals:

A goal - 2:25 or faster
B goal - PR with anything between a 2:27: 51 and 2:25
C goal - faster than 2:30
D goal - finish! :)

Here's hoping for a "perfect for a run" kind of day!

"Weekly" Wrap-Up: 9/29 - 10/12

Yes, I really did miss two weeks in a row of posting my weekly wrap-ups. These are not pretty. I have not been very consistent. There have been some days of choosing cross-training over running (which isn't all bad), but there have been a lot of days of being down right tired. Hence the lack of posts right along with the minimal work outs. I've learned these ruts are going to be part of the game. Thankfully, unlike a few years ago, the last two years have built me up enough to know that I believe exercise and running is not going anywhere. It has become a part of who I am, and I will work through this!

Here's how the last two weeks have shaken out:

Monday 9/29: planned - TRX and 6 miles or boot camp depending on the weather. Actual - nothing. Looking back, this was the Monday following my parent's visit, and I think I was just worn out. I took the evening to run a couple off errands and then laid low. Did I feel good about it? Not necessarily. That's the thing - I will take these nights off to recoup and rest up, but by the end of the week I am still worn out and going to bed early.

Tuesday 9/30:  planned and actual - Kickboxing and Interval Conditioning/kettle bells. Kickboxing is kickboxing and I don't typically have more to say about it. I try to make a mental note, or a written note, if there was anything I really liked about IC/kettle bells. I don't have anything written down for this night, but I do think this was the night we did lots of jump rope. We did rounds of 150 jumps, 50 crunches, 20 swings (I think.) and then 130, 120, etc. It wasn't a bad workout, but I am a slow jump roper, so there was no way I was going to do 150 jumps. Most of the rounds I was happy I got to 100 without spending most of my time untangling the rope!

Wednesday 10/1: planned - TRX and 8x400. I made it to TRX, but never fit in my run. It was another scheduling issues. With TRX being at 5:00, most of those nights I am running out of work at the last minute, going to get Ava, rushing her home, and running back out the door. Then I am starving since my lunch is at 11:00. So I will get through TRX, go home to eat supper, and then it is really difficult to get back out of the house!

Thursday 10/2: planned and actual - Kickboxing. I kicked and hit that bag with what I had, and then rushed home for the Packer - Viking game! What a great night for a Packer-backer in MN!

Friday 10/3: planned - Rest. After an inconsistent start to the week, I decided I would go to cycle box after work. I went. But I didn't find myself enjoying it. I don't know if it was the group (different classes bring in different groups), the fact that it was Friday, or it is felt like I was forcing myself. Either way, I pushed through and it was fine. The last 10 minutes were extremely hard though - I thought it was a 50 minute class, but we went for 60. Mentally a challenge after already being mentally not checked in for much of the class!

Saturday 10/4: planned - 12 miles. Actual - a 45 minute cycling class. The forecast had taken a quick turn towards fall, and I had no desire to run in 30* temperatures with morning frost. I need to mentally build up to winter running! So, I signed up for cycling.

Sunday 10/5: planned - cycling/kettle bells/yoga (20/20/20 class). Though I intended to do the run I didn't do on Saturday, it ended up being a chore day. I am learning I need to go back to one planned workout for the weekend, and if I fit in two - GREAT! There is so much I don't get done during the week while working full time, spending time with Ava, usually being good about fitting in workouts, and trying to go to bed at a decent hour, that I need the time on the weekend. My workout then just becomes another bullet on the to-do list and I don't usually put it above the chores and things. Hence no run this day.

Monday 10/6: planned - 8 miles. I planned 8 with the hopes of making up some missed miles, but by the time I got home, we had supper, and I got out the door I had time for 4.79 miles in 54:33 (11:23 average). Ah yes. I can't deny it is that time of year, I need to find some routes on the sidewalks instead of the paths so I can have some street lights for after the ever-sooner darkness

Tuesday 10/7: planned - Kickboxing and Interval Conditioning/kettle bells. Actual - I worked until after 5:30, and instead of running out for kickboxing, just went to Interval Conditioning. It was a great workout. We did 500 swings!! They were done in 5 rounds of 10 swings, 10 push-ups, 15 swings, 15 tricep dips, 25 swings, 20 squats, 50 swings, hold plank. When we were all done, we'd start the next round. What hurt the most as we finished was my forearms! Shockingly, I wasn't super sore the next day!

Wednesday 10/8: planned - Speed Work - probably 6 miles total. Actual - rest. Just the mid-week blues, tiredness setting in. I was focusing this week on trying to not worry about getting such long workouts in, but trying to get a solid 30-60 minutes every day. Didn't work on this particular day, but going forward, after three or four tough weeks in a row, I'm going to plan it out that way and hope it makes a difference.

Thursday 10/9: planned and actual - Interval Conditioning/kettle bells. After the 500 swings, I didn't write anything down from this class. I am barely remembering that we focused on smaller muscle groups with more typical, short bursts of cardio.

Friday 10/10: planned and actual - Rest, as we made the 4+ hour drive up north after I got off work.

Saturday 10/11: planned - Long Run. Actual - nothing. :(  I was super disappointed in myself for not running this morning. I needed the long run before Mankato. I let silly things be my excuse - the weather, the route (being at my in-laws), getting up late, eating a late breakfast, making our food for the potluck, only have time for x miles instead of a good long run .... one of those days I wish I could have back and just make myself get out the door.

Sunday 10/12:  planned - Rest, knowing we'd be coming back from up north. I secretly hoped I'd be back in time for cycling/bells/yoga. Well, I ended up driving back Saturday night with Chad's cousin with the hope of having some time to myself that morning and getting in a workout before Chad and Ava got home. Sigh. Having the house to myself (which never happens), I slept until 10! Then I did some paper work for work (though not as much as I'd have liked to get done), and before I knew it, they were home. Sunday crazies kicked in, and the weekend was over.

----

As you can see still not finding a good balance between work, family, and self. But trying to figure out what I can do. Part of it is, I really increased what I was doing this summer for workouts (when I wasn't working), and I foolishly thought I'd be able to maintain that. Not realistic for me right now, but if you have tips on how you do it - I will take them!!

Totals for the two weeks:

8 group fitness classes
just 1 run for 4.79 miles (makes me cringe!!)
6:39:33 - the time spend "training"

----

Can't believe it is Thursday already. Looking for a strong finish to this week, and hoping a little break from school will help me get back into routine. I also plan to spend a lot of time catching up on some paperwork from home!

Motivational Monday: 10.13.14

Better late than never. I tried posting this last night - to go live this morning - but I was having internet connection issues. Keeping the motivation simply this week, because I just need to get back to the basics. Still having a hard time balancing everything, and not being very consistent.

Alas, here is the plan for the week.

Monday: TRX, and while I would have like to run it was pouring out and I went to boot camp.
Tuesday: Rest - I have conferences from 4-8
Wednesday: TRX and 6 miles
Thursday: kickboxing and kettle bells
Friday: cycle box and core (or maybe a run?)
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 13.1 miles - Mankato Marathon (half-distance)

---

I know I am two weeks behind now on summarizing my workouts. I also just need to post in general. I have a couple days off school at the end of the week, and hoping to use them to my advantage.

Enjoy what is  left of your Monday; and I hope you have a fantastic week.

My View

My view until nearly 11 last night ....

work laptop and teacher's manual.

Between Sunday and Monday, I've spent nearly 4 hours working on lesson plans at home. Thankfully, I am planned through next week. Which doesn't say as much as I'd like it to since we only have classes two days next week.

Real blog posts are planned. I just need to feel caught up at work.

Right.

Motivational Monday: 10.6.14

with just two weeks to go until Mankato, it doesn't feel right that this is the reminder I need. But, it is. And I am moving into these last two weeks with an odd sense of confidence (and a post with more coming later this week).

----

Here's what I'm planning this week. What you looking forward to?

Monday: 8 miles
Tuesday: Kickboxing and Interval Conditioning/kettle bells
Wednesday: Speed Work - probably 6 miles total
Thursday: Interval Conditioning/kettle bells
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Long Run - we'll be at my in-laws, so not sure what my route will be. Hoping to get in 12-14 miles.
Sunday: Rest; however, if we're home on time, I might try to make it to the Cycling/kettle bells/yoga class.

In Review: September

For as strong as September started, I am okay with the month being over. By the end, the reality of being back at work had taken its toll. I went into the month thinking (unrealistically) that I'd be able to maintain the quantity of workouts I did over the summer, spend the necessary time I needed at and for work, and spend quality time with my family. I should've been more prepared than I was to have to find a new balance, because I don't feel the balance I had over the summer! And I miss it, but I will figure it out. Admittedly, my 9pm TV hour doesn't do me any favors either, but I love the shows on at that time!

Here's how the month played out ....

I planned to work out 25/30 days. I ended with 19/30 days. The 25 was taking just one rest day each week. Even if I give myself two, I should have ended up over 20. I had a few stretches where I just got tired and a few days I made some excuses. I also had a cancelled class and some things outside of my control.

Somehow I ended up writing down 146 miles for the month as a goal. However, early on in the month, with just one missed one, I started trying to figure out how I came up with that number. Since then I've added and readded what I had originally planned and still can't figure out what I did. Most consistently, it looks like I should've been around 90-95 miles. After a few missed long runs and some missed mid-distance runs when I did TRX instead and then chose to go home for supper, I ended with just 40.71 miles. This is by far the most disappointing stat of the month. Plus it is my lowest mileage month of the year! :( Ugh.

I planned to go to 24 fitness classes for strength and cross-training this month, and ended with 22. I actually missed 5 of my originally planned classes (one was cancelled, one I couldn't get signed up for, one Sunday I ran instead, and two TRX classes I skipped). I made up a few of them when I went to three back-back, 25 minute classes on a Saturday morning. I am enjoying kickboxing - and cycling when I can get there (which isn't as often as I did this summer). I still love my Interval Conditioning/kettle bells. TRX isn't everything it was cracked up to be, but I can feel it the next day!

Total time spent training/working out was 22:26:46.

October is already planned out ... my main focuses will be my half-marathon and finding the rhythm I need for the school year!

Any big goals for this month?

Weekly Wrap-Up: 9.22.14 - 9.28.14

Better late than never, right? Off-da. The transition to the new school year has hit me for sure, and I am not feeling the balance I had this summer. Not surprising, I guess. Realizing I am going to have to go back to the drawing board to decide what I can do to scale back my workouts but get the best results, balance having a heavier workload at school than I did last year, and make sure I am spending what time I can with Ava and Chad. Though that is probably not the order I need to prioritize those things in.

At any rate. Here is what last week looked like. It started as a strong cross-training week, but running was not ideal. Especially since I am nearing the end of a training cycle and hoping for a PR at my half. Sounds familiar, huh? I need to quit planning races for a month after crazy, busy life!

----

Monday - planned - 6 miles, TRX. Actual - TRX. It was another one of those evenings of cramming in what I could at work, rushing to get Ava, changing into workout clothes with just seconds to spare, and racing out the door to TRX. Afterwards, I am hungry for supper, and then it is next to impossible to leave for the run.

Tuesday - planned and actual - kickboxing and kettle bells. Tuesday nights are the one night that I have been able to consistently get in what I plan. And I am loving the combination of classes.

Wednesday - planned - speed work and TRX. Since I hadn't ran since my 5 miles on the previous Monday, I skipped speed work and just did a regular old run. I ended with 6.10 miles in 1:11:11, an 11:40 average. It wasn't a great run, but it wasn't terrible. I also skipped TRX, knowing the run was more important to fit in.

Thursday - planned and actual - kettle bells. I love that I feel like she is switching things up lately. Tonight she played 4 songs, about 4 minutes each. Through each song, she gave us three (or four?) exercises that we basically did AMRAP (as many rounds as possible). And, just like I just borrowed that phrase from Cross Fit, I liked that the workout gave it a cross fit or boot camp feel.

Friday - rest

Saturday - planned - 12 miles. Actual - ugh - nothing. With my parents in town, on one hand I had the perfect opportunity to get out for a long run without feeling guilty because Ava could have the time with Nama and Papa. But - on the other hand, I also enjoyed that laid back weekend and spending time with my parents. I spent some time Saturday morning picking up around the house, then my mom and I took Ava to a Harvest Fest that was going on in town. We had a relaxing afternoon, and after supper Chad and I had a date night. Do I regret it? Yeah, but I enjoyed the day, too.

Sunday - rest. I thought about going for my long run. We decided instead to take my parents out for breakfast. The Packers played the Bears at noon, and I don't miss the games that are actually on TV here! :) After the game, it was business as usual for a Sunday evening. Packing lunches, lesson plans, putting away laundry, giving Ava a bath, etc.

Totals for the week:
second week in a row with just 1 measly run for 6.10 miles
4 fitness classes
Total Time Training - 3:46:11
