Mankato Marathon (Half) - Recap

I cannot start my own race re-cap until I share a few pictures of Ava's KidsK. This girl made me proud again!

Tired, but pushing to the finish! We really need to work on pacing ;)

always proud of her medal

Chad took this one of her running in. I told her Daddy was there, so she was looking and waving at everyone! I guess I wasn't specific enough regarding how far up he was!

Now on to my own race report! I have to say, the day went much better than I was expecting given the state of my training cycle. We all know good runs and bad runs can happen at any time for reasons beyond anything we do. Today was an on day for me! While it was a cold wait for the start (feel-like temps in the upper 30s), it really was perfect running weather once we got going.

I've learned and worked really hard on all my races this summer not to go out too fast. It worked for me again. The first two miles were consistent, and faster than I was expecting, honestly - around 10:45 each. Around mile 2.5 was the first water stop - this slowed me down that mile a little along with some gently rolling hills. Just before mile 3, the marathoners went one way and the half-runners went the other. For just a moment, I wished I was turning left with the full-runners! Here is where I came up to the split - I just loved the view of all the specks of runners who had already made the turn. The pictures isn't zoomed in nicely, but it's a fun picture.

I had a sharp pain in my right glute/hip area for around 1 mile. It started around mile 2 and ended somewhere after the mile 3 marker. The next two miles weren't as fast as I ran the first two, but when I hit mile 5 in well less than 55 minutes and passed an energetic cheer zone I was set! From that point on, I just kept going. And I felt amazing. I walked briefly at the water stops, but otherwise was running strong. I have no good words to describe it! I just ran!

Here's a picture of the trail we got to run on for much of the race. My kind of route for sure.

Around mile 8, I could feel the fatigue start to set in, but it was mind over matter because I was still maintaining great paces. It wasn't until after mile marker 10 that I started walking up a few of the hills. Mile 12 was really tough and I had to dig deep. But - I'm not going to lie - I knew the PR was in the bag by this point. It was just a matter of by how much. My Garmin read 2:23:33 and 13.25 miles. It gave me an average of 10:50/mile. My official final time was 2:23:30, and with a 13.1 mile distance gave me an average of 10:58/mile. Official results can be found here.

showing off my bling!

greeted by my biggest fan.

Chad and Ava were at the finish but we didn't see each other until later! Hmmm. oh well.

Here are my splits from my Garmin. I really can't put into words how excited and proud of myself I am for running faster than 10 min/miles in recent shorter races, and to pull off a faster than 11 min/miles in a half-marathon. Feeling like I owe a lot to the instructors of my classes at the Y! The cross training I am doing is making me stronger for sure!
