Swimming Lessons - Week 1

Last week, Ava started a two week session of swimming lessons. This summer we opted to go with the parks and rec department; lessons are held at the outdoor pool. They run four, two-week sessions. Lessons are every day for those two weeks. Luckily, we got into session 4, which fell on weeks I wasn't teaching summer school and we are home both Fridays!

Week 1 was pretty successful. The only complaint I had was on the one day we experienced rain in the morning that kept the first lesson time slot out of the water (which had to be us, of course). They always advertise come regardless, because if they can't get into the water, they will do a safety day. So, we went - and trust me when I say there were many families that skipped! I was quite disappointed when safety day only lasted five minutes! Say, what? I assumed it would at least last the lesson time. It is what it is, but I hope we get through this week without any weather interruptions.

Ava is in Level 1- Penguins. She is comfortable in the water, but I don't think she will pass this level on the first time. And I am okay with that. I was willing to put her in the 5+ lessons even if it meant she didn't pass (one of the things she has to be able to do according to the description is swim 25 yards without a flotation device), than put her in the 3-5 age group where I don't think she would have been challenged at all.

Anyway. Without further ado, the best pictures I could get on my phone! I should just bring my camera to these things, but have you noticed no one does that anymore? Sad.

first task, kick with the kick board. I think she is holding up her hand telling the instructor she is 5 years old.

arms and legs with the pool noodle; no help!

I had a video to go with it, but Blogger thinks it is too big! I'll have to take a shorter one this week!
