December Traditions: Take 2

This post actually starts right after I posted last Saturday. You may or may not know that St. Nick Day is December 6; so on the eve of the 5th you are to set your stocking out in hopes that it will be filled! Here is a great article on the origination of this tradition.  This is a tradition I grew up with, as my grandpa is from Germany, and it is something we grew up with as kids. Growing up it seemed everyone did it, but I think it is because I grew up in an area settled highly by German immigrants! I've incorporated the tradition into our December festivities ever since Ava was a baby.

The tradition says St. Nick gives fruit and coins. Hence, those gold wrapped chocolate coins they sell this time of year! I remember getting candy and little toys. With Ava, we've given candy/little treats, a Christmas book, Christmas pajamas, socks and underwear, her  annual ornament, and a few stocking stuffer toys. This year, she did not get her ornament; I asked her if St. Nick should keep picking it out or if she wanted to start. She said she wanted to start!

ready for morning

I think she is excited about the book! This year was fun; it was one of the first years she woke up remembering St. Nick was supposed to have come!

bubble tape gum!

She had gotten a plastic slinky as a prize at school, and was excited to see an original one in her stocking!

a little lego set!

some of that EOS lip balm stuff! She got lotion, too!

pretty excited about the nail polish kit!

it even has little sprinkles!

telling daddy he had something in his stocking, too!

and so does mommy!

Fast forward to this weekend. We had a play date set up with her friend Signe; so what better time to bake another bath of cookies!

And probably my personal favorite holiday tradition: Christmas cards! I am a little bit later than normal getting ours out, but here they are - all addressed and ready to go!

I made this card holder over four years ago. We haven't gotten too many yet this year, and I feel like we've gotten fewer cards in recent years, but usually this ends up pretty full! I bet this week will have quite a few in the mail! Our card is displayed in the upper left - I have a copy of almost every card Chad and I have sent out as a couple!

So other than another round of baking and addressing cards, it was another busy weekend. Saturday was swimming lessons and practice again at church for the Sunday School program. Followed by a 4 hour play date and cookie baking. Needless to say, Ava and I both fell asleep pretty early last night. I am a sucker for it when she crawls up in my lap!

Today was her Sunday School program, so we were up and in the shower early. We then ran to Shopko, Perkins for lunch, Hallmark for ornament picking, and Sterling Main Street to pick up her picture from when Santa was there and some Christmas shopping. Home to finish laundry, watch the Packer game, and pack lunches! Whew. She did not fight bedtime at 8:00 at all! I have pictures and videos form today, but haven't uploaded them yet. I will have to share those in another post!

In the workout world -

I did indeed get out for a run after posting about it on Wednesday. It was 45* in December! It wasn't as fast as last Saturday's run, but it went okay. I almost negative split it, but the last mile was again crossing busy streets (I didn't realize how lucky I was in mile 1 when I crossed them all the first time) and it had gotten dark, so that slowed me down a little. I sort of wonder what my average pace would've been if I stopped my watch at 4 miles instead of keeping it on all the way home?

Thursday - kettle bells. We used kettle bells and bosu.

Friday night I skipped to instead go to our work Christmas program, and you already know how the weekend went.

Hoping to break a sweat a little more this week, but also needing to focus on getting caught up at work. We'll see how it goes.

I think I have heard of the stocking tradition but I think you are the only person I have heard of that still does it, that is awesome. Ava looks very happy with it too!
