December Traditions

I love this time of year for the traditions! This time of year - more than any the rest of the year - has traditions that must be followed through on annually! It is part of what makes the season so special! The first thing to get around here is to put up our tree. We did that last weekend! That last few years I've actually had it up before Thanksgiving, so that by the time we get home from traveling for the holiday, the tree is ready to light!

Since we've moved to Austin, it has become our tradition to go see Santa during Christmas in the Southwest. Each part of town takes a night (I think they are all in the week after Thanksgiving, but we've only ever go to SW) and all the businesses host activities or give away little gifts. Seeing Santa is our number one priority though; mainly because we don't always have time to go and do all the other activities! Thursday night was no exception; I left work about an hour earlier than normal, we waited in line for about 20 minutes (it is very busy, and the best place to see Santa in town!) and then rushed off to dance! They give you a free print, that we can go pick up later this week, but this is what I got.

looking so grown up these days!

look how her body language changed when he started to talk to her! She got shy and didn't tell him what she wanted for Christmas. When I asked why she said she forgot!

Another favorite is the baking of treats! I have typically set aside one full day - one of the first two weekends of the month - to just get it all done. It is very daunting, but I know I wouldn't finish if I didn't just get it done and over with! This year we did it a little bit differently. A co-worker I've worked with since switching jobs has a daughter the same age as Ava. Now that they are finally going to school together, they are becoming friends. We've been talking about getting together with the girls for awhile, so we finally made it happen. I invited them over to make cookies. We did cut-out cookies! The girls got bored, but it still went faster than doing it alone! Next weekend I'll have to put together a few other favorite seasonal goodies! This was good for today, though!

I'll keep sharing as we go through the season! What are some of your favorite traditions this time of year?

On top of baking cookies with Lily and Amy, Saturday was busy in general. I made the dough so that it could chill right after I got up. Ava had swimming lessons at 9:30, and practice as church for next week's Sunday School program at 10:15. Yeah, we were late! That went until 11:45, so we got home just in time for Amy and Lily to come over.

I did squeeze in a run while Ava was at church. I could have taken 45 minutes, so I told myself I'd turn around after 20 minutes. I ended up finishing 3.24 minutes in 37:49. I actually didn't watch my pace the whole time because I needed to monitor the clock so I knew that I wouldn't be late picking Ava up! I did know approximately when to switch over, and followed a 1-9 ratio - walking .1 mile and running .9 miles. My first mile was 11:43. I thought about trying to negative split it, but at mile 2 saw I had run the exact same split. I figured that was okay too! I decided then I was going to make sure I finished running steady the whole run. Running uphill in mile three made it difficult, but I did it! It wasn't an overly difficult run, but I felt good when I was done. Oh - and let's not forget to point out that temps were in the upper 30s, the running paths are clear of the snow and ice we had at the beginning of the week, and there were still geese in the park I ran through! Nice December so far!

Our evening was  a little more low key. Ava and I ended up finding some Christmas songs on You Tube, which led to finding a 50 minute video of random kid songs. We sang and danced, and I typed this post!

As cheesy as it sounds, it was nearly a perfect day!
